Part 1: Start up

11-11-2018 04:24 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Had a lot of scrap pieces left over from the last project….some of the Pine scraps can be used for jigs and such. The White Oak scraps….some were just too knot ridden to be of much use, other than roast some hotdogs out at the firepit. Other scraps were re-sawn down… Some of these got sliced into thinner stock… There was also a chunk of 1×12 Oak… That may get trimmed down into a lid..for the box…selected the best of the mess of 1×3R...

Part 2: panels and grooves

11-13-2018 05:13 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Took Sunday off. Was feeling under the weather, and it was Veterans’ Day. Today? Monday or not….things needed to get done….at least something besides all them trips to the bathroom..Finally was able to head to the shop….and, get those two panels out of the clamps. One was a tad narrower than the other. Used that one to get the other sized for width. The blank for the two end panels was also roughly trimmed for width. Then, time to remove the “rou...

Part 3: Mortise, tenons, and glue...oh my

11-14-2018 01:46 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Headed to the shop about 2 pm…..emerged from the shop just after 5pm….with cramps starting in the legs…Ok..gave the “new” tablesaw fence a test drive…it was rock solid, never budged a bit…had to cobble up a push stick, as the parts would be a bit narrow.. Ripped the worse sections of these off….then made the grooves…since these were all the same size…jig wasn’t the greatest….couple parts had issues staying in the jig&#...

Part 4: One of THEM days....

11-15-2018 07:37 AM by bandit571 | 6 comments »

Didn’t start out too bad, though…...but the longer I stayed in the shop, the worst things got….and the high the cussing levels went…..enough to make even a CPO blush….. Ok…first up, time to remove this, from the clamps I think it has been sitting long enough….spread more glue around, “recycle” the clamps… And set it aside….where it won’t fall over….cleaned the first glue up and checked for square….one...

Part 5: Thursday's Misadventures

11-16-2018 11:16 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Wasn’t much better…but I was getting something done… Woke up to this….and it got worse as the day puttered along… Got all the clamps removed…and promptly recycled some….the unclamped end panel made a popping sound when the clamps came off…..Screw I used was too short….. Replaced this 1-1/8” with a 2” long screw..had to wax the threads…Pulled things back together with a clamp, then added the screw to keep thin...

Part 6: Friday's tasks

11-17-2018 09:18 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Road trip….bill paying….maybe a bit of woodworking…Might have the match cutter about figured out….but, centering it is still a PITA… I start with it retracted, then advance until it barely cuts….lots of candle wax, too…. I already had most of this last panel trimmed to match the other end panel….even had to drum sand the feet…. While cutting the tongues, I kept check, to make sure I was taking off the right amount..on each side&#...

Part 7: Almost done

11-20-2018 05:38 PM by bandit571 | 5 comments »

And, posted as a project, to boot. Out of the clamps the other day.. Got everything cleaned up, and the top cut to size….corners sanded smooth, and a router to round over them. Added a coat of Amber Shellac.. Hmmm, lid does need something… Backside….wonder how the hinges will fit.. Box is only 6-1/2” wide on the ends, by 11-1/4” long…..stands 9-1/8” tall, counting the lid, and the foot pads.Got out the router, since it was still set up ...
