10-18-2018 11:14 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Short vacation from the shop….The Boss has found something else she wants built…uh-oh.. Old &Ugly needs to go, I am told. Built 26 years ago..started out as a 4 drawer chest of drawers….that got changed to a changing table, when our son was born….Instead of drawers, they became shelves…with doors…..later it was a Pantry….now just a catch-all….open those doors at your own risk…. Boss found a catalog ( uh-oh…) that had a p...

10-18-2018 11:34 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Was looking through the stash of Oak i brought home….this might be interesting… Maybe.. Hmmm? Not all was this fancy-schmanzy, though.. Good thing I’ll need some narrow parts…hauled a few to the shop.. These were for side panel #2..already had parts for #1 cut to length.. Already stashing cut-offs, for smaller parts.. Well, today..after tests at the local Hospital…and a nap….did a cardio workout.. This is about an hour’s worth&...

10-19-2018 10:46 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ok..side #1 came out of the clamps, today.. This may be the outside of the case..And this goes to the inside….Plan right now is to have both panels done, clamped together inside to inside face, and trim to final size….and a rebate for the back panel to sit in… Had three more boards to glue up….to make Panel #2.. Kind of gappy….We have ways.. Clamped to the bench….run a jack plane down the edge. I had a straight edge line drawn , so I could joi...

Part 4: LONG day in the shop

10-21-2018 05:20 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

But, got a few things done. Had a Barn Sale to go check out….not so much for the old tools, but maybe get enough old Pine to help the build along…..1×10 x 8’ and a pair of 1×3 x 8’ pine boards…$15…. So..first task for today..after lunch, was to plop the sides onto the bench….and do a trim.. Almost just a slab….edge back by the tool well, was close enough of a match, that just a jointer plane would be needed….the edges cl...

Part 5: A little assembly?

10-22-2018 09:45 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Needed to mill some rebates, get the second frame done….and buy some screws..Second frame, the one the drawer will be sliding on… Was glued up, spent most of the day waiting on the glue to cure…rebates? Set up the Stanley 45. Once I figured out which were the backs of the two side panels, I could mark where to put the rebate,,clamp each side panel to the side of the bench.. Mr. Stanley does NOT like knots, had to chisel a couple out of the way… Decided t...

Part 6: face frame and a back

10-23-2018 05:32 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

had some time to kill, waiting on the Boss. Decided to fix the tablesaw, and see what I could get done…Hauled a plank to the shop….will be cut into parts for the face frame…first, the saw needed some work. Mitre guage isn’t the biggest…at least it doesn’t rattle around in the slot. Found a STRAIGHT scrap…attached it to the mitre gauge.. It has a pair of slots for screws. Strip was a bit long, so I ran the mitre gauge down both slots.. ...

Part 7: Face frame installed..plugs done

10-24-2018 02:40 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

two trips to the shop, today… one to drill and install the parts for the face frame. One drill for the counter-bored hole, then another to do a pilot hole, so a third drill could drive the screws….clamps to pull thing together..to where they needed to be…bead of glue on the back of each part….19 holes to plug,,, I kept the cutout from the bottom rail….figured it could provide enough plugs.. Didn’t burn a one! Drill press was still in “Lo...

Part 8: Drawer building, part 1

10-25-2018 05:36 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Well…made the mistake of telling the Boss that I could bring the base cabinet upstairs….but,,that Ugly thing had to be empty, and out of the Kitchen..first…..was almost like a bomb had gone off! First off,,,there WAS a zip-tie holding the doors shut…for the simple reason that was the only way they would STAY shut…picture above is after two trash bags were filled…and a tub for the firepit.. Was filled enough to start a second one….tried to help&#...

Part 9: Drawer Building 101, part 2

10-26-2018 03:54 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, I had the Stanley 45 all set up to plough grooves for the bottom of the drawer to reside in. Made a jig, to hold the front and the two sides.. Just three sticks of scrap….third one to hold the part down. Front was done first, then the jig was changed to the shorter length of the sides.. Got both of these sides done. Then it was time to tear the Stanley 45 down, and set it up for dados.. Exchange the #12 cutter for this #18-1/2 cutter ( matches the thickness of the pi...

Part 10: Cut list, and a start on the doors

10-27-2018 04:07 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Puzzle was how to cut what Oak I have left, into all the parts I needed to make…. This was the easy part. I need a top shelf for the unit above the microwave oven…Shelf needs to be 9” wide, and match the top of the base. Length I can cut to…width? Should be enough, and enough left over for a stile for one of the door frames… I have these three, at 3/4” thick, by 6-1/2” wide….Topper needs two sides at 8” wide….by 23̶...

Part 11: Too LONG of a day

10-28-2018 06:31 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ever get an entire day IN the shop? Me neither..but, was in and out of it all day long….worked around running errands and such, letting glue ups dry…. Well, I did manage to pick up some hinges… And some knobs and the washers to “back them up” with….keeps the skinny end from sinking into the wood…And a handful of cheap brushes… Had this glue up done, will be the shelf for the Topper..sides of the topper and this shelf all needed to be r...

Part 12: Sunday's Finale, and a PIP

10-29-2018 07:37 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ok, Sunday….nasty, dreary, rainy outside the windows…..even a Hail Storm came through….seems when we get a lot of rain…the Dungeon gets a small creek running across the floor to the floor drain….. Life in a basement….of course, the creek HAS to go through, right where I’m working…. And each rain shower, a new wave would come downstream. Ok…had a door to repair.. I had went ahead and drilled corner for a deep counter bored hole&#...
