Part 1: A start up

02-22-2018 02:36 AM by bandit571 | 3 comments »

Ok, seems I did so well making the last one out of Ash…now my Daughter wants one….and, since she usually PAINTS ( grrrrrr) her furniture items…..hers will get made from Pine….then I’ll hand her a brush…. There was a few design changes, as well…..the raised panel door on the lower cabinet? No longer there, open shelves (2) with a face frame around them. I still get to build the two drawers, though. upper cabinet will stay the same…..fo...

Part 2: Second Panel done, and a clean up..

02-24-2018 02:36 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Second panel was glued up…. Used the old jointer again….This time around, the clamps were a bit different. Started with the middle clamp. Got all three boards in the same “plane” and made sure they stayed put. then worked my way towards the ends….the cauls were doubled up….Less marks in the good wood. Far end used a pair of Visegrip Finger clamps to hold the pair…got a little crowded. Good thing the clamp was already tightened down...

Part 3: side panels worked on

02-25-2018 03:28 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Got both panels done, for now….one of the rare days I could spend an afternoon IN the shop.. Once I figured which face goes to which face, I stacked the two panels together, clamped them up. Then used the saw /router guide to square both ends. Then, since the panels were still clamped up, I jointed the edges… Had to use the jack plane on a couple knotty spots, then the big guy could finish up.. Less time hauling the 10 pounder around, that way. Left the panels cl...

Part 4: Frames, part 1

03-02-2018 12:50 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, trying to get caught up here…A while back, I was able to haul the 1×2s to the shop, and make a few cuts with the “small” mitresaw.. Should be enough parts…I hope. Set up the Larger Mitresaw’s depth stops…. Found the stock holders.. Now you know why there are those slots in the mitre box’s deck. Since I was done with the other mitre box, I put it’s saw away… That little saw will get used a bit later, I folded up t...

Part 5: Mortise work..

03-02-2018 01:22 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, mortises to house all them tenons. I used a tenon to do a layout for each mortise… I left the stile sit out a bit from the jig, for a reason.. The little Disston No.4 backsaw was used to saw the waste….open ended mortise ( they blow out anyway in Pine) but I could only saw at this angle. I tried to either stay inside of the lines, or at least split them… Then a mortise chisel to dig a hole where the saw couldn’t reach….then come in from the end...

Part 6: plywood day..meh

03-03-2018 02:11 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

House sitting and Puppy sitting today and tomorrow…and trying to get a little shop time in…Hauled two plywood panels to the shop…one for shelf panels, and one for the back of the case..thinking that would be it, for the day…not. had trouble marking the one panel for the size of the shelf….a sign of things to come.. Thought I could use either the 6” Skil saw, or the cordless one…..could not get past the case to get either..decided to use a handsaw...

Part 7: Face Frame, part 1

03-05-2018 03:48 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Rough day in the shop….first trip did not go well, was making mistakes, could not concentrate on things…ran the Stanley 45 along the wrong edge…..hands were getting too close to sharp objects….closed the shop. Went back upstairs until the mind could focus on the jobs being done. Much safer that way. Did not leave any “Fresh DNA” on stuff in the shop. Kept stewing about it all day long..it kind of got me irish up…...was finally able to calm...

Part 8: Part 2, the Sunday Follies

03-05-2018 04:25 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Hand tremors…PITA to do woodworking with. New meds may be the cause, will find out Monday. Anyway, this morning, I was still house, and puppy sitting….once they were done with their business outside, and laying down for their all-morning naps…I could head to the shop for a bit…had to rearrange a little bit.. Moved the case a bit ( those pipe clamps are nice, but a detriment to knee caps) so I could use the mitresaw.. Swung it over to the “45” st...

Part 9: Catching things up, face frame installed

03-08-2018 11:47 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Amongst other “chores”....Doctor Visits, VA paperwork, the usual distractions… Anyway, I got the mortise and tenons done this week on the face frame…even did a glue up.. Had to cut a bit away, so the beads can wrap around the openings.. Will need a little clean up. Let the frame sit a day….then started an install.. Test fit to mark where the counter-bored screw holes would go….then drilled both the counter-bores and a pilot hole at each mark....

Part 10: Catching up, part 2,making a top panel

03-09-2018 12:16 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ok, got the 1×8 x 8’ plank to the shop, somehow….had the bench cleared off, and ready to do a bit of work… Saw was needed to make a few cuts….needed three pieces 27” long…lay out a cut line.. Making sure the line was hanging over the end far enough to miss the bench vise…. Was trying NOT to include this into one of the pieces.. But, to get rid of this ugly thing, I had to use it’s little brother.. We have ways…..the fir...

Part 11: Top is done, case assembled

03-10-2018 03:07 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Worked in two separate sessions yesterday….had a morning “shift”, a trip to get a CT Scan on the head, then when we got back home, an evening shift….Morning stuff:Top was removed from the clamps, set aside for a while. Ripped a few 1×1s from the leftovers…needed to build out the drawer runners, for the drawer to slide on….also needed guides to keep the drawer centered in the opening… A bead of glue and a screw. Both are attached to the webf...

Part 12: Build-a-drawer, 101

03-11-2018 08:41 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

two days to build one drawer? I am getting slow in my old age… Anyway, this may be a bit long, better get settled in…. Cut this to size..goal being to build a drawer around it. Had a couple “left-overs” for the sides, they needed to match in width and length…Length was at the bandsaw, later the mitre box. width was the easy part. Then “shot” the end grain straight..Set the sides aside for a bit. Corner joints will be through dovetails&...

Part 13: Drawer installed, plugs and other adventures

03-13-2018 11:27 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Got the clamps off the drawer….needed to clean up the dovetails a bit. One place I could not get to when all those clamps were in the way..was along the back edge of the drawer’s bottom. Large square to mark a line, roughly centered on the drawer’s back….added a few screws.. Should hold things in place. Drawer front had a huge knot in it… Drilled a hole for a bolt. Then laid out the same location at the other end of the drawer front, so these match...

Part 14: Bookcase started

03-15-2018 10:47 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

OK, Those two longer sides, needed a rebate added to them. Once I figured out which was the “inside” “top”, Back and bottom and have both match….Clamped one side into the vise on the bench.. Checked the Wards 78 to see how it was set up.. Might be about right? full length shaving. Got both rebates done.. This will “house” the plywood back panel… Time to lay out for a few sliding dovetails… Used a book to set the sp...

Part 15: Bookcase, face frame and top

03-19-2018 02:01 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Trying to get caught up here…Face frame: Stanley 45 and a #22 bead cutter.. Two cuts to make the outside corner, a single for the inside edges…The top rail only got one bead. Fancy cuts, to produce a tenon, once I got sizes figured out.. Then made a few cuts into the stiles… And made a few mortises.. Top one was easy. the one for the bottom rail? I had to get things fine tuned, for the beads to line up just right Spread some glue, add some clamps.. ...

Part 16: Catching up,2....case done, door start

03-19-2018 02:47 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, face frame out of the clamps. Stuck against the case, to mark out where to put a few screw holes at… These two came out, once the frame was laying on the bench.. Scratch awl to make a starter hole for the 3/8” forstner bit. Then drill a pilot hole.. Once all the holes were done, I moved the frame off the bench, and placed the case on the bench…Had an extra hole to fill. It just gets a counter sink. Bead of glue run around where the frame meets the case...

Part 17: Build a door

03-21-2018 09:57 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Trip to the Blue Borg….wound up with a pair of CLEAR 1×6 x 4’ boards….Got those cut to length….had to rip the fancy boards to remove a couple bad knots.. Both boards had a knot like this….Figured out how wide I needed for the panel…made a couple rip cuts. Has more waves than the N. Korean Cheer Squad….We have ways.. Also cleaned up the edges on the “new” boards, was finally able to glue up a panel.. I also cut grooves i...

Part 18: Last drawer and aPIP

03-26-2018 02:02 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Just getting caught up….had a few health issues over the weekend… Had a blank for the skinny drawer’s front, cut and fitted to the opening..needed to rip a board down to make it, and these three parts… And, with my usual luck..the two side pieces were 3/4” too short….made do, anyway… Front gets through dovetails, to match the other drawer. Saw a few lines.. Chop about half of one side’s pins, flip the board over, and pop the rest ou...
