Part 1: Starting up

07-27-2017 10:17 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Let’s see….been awhile. Have a nice stash left over from the last two projects. There is a slab.. 4/4×13” x 49” long. Someone was testing out a stain when he found a crack….no biggie, we have ways.. Mostly Maple, and some Poplar planks….had a couple 4/4 planks in the stack.. There is some Black Walnut….1×4 x 7’s…..and a few 3/8” Poplar planks…. Maybe build a chest of drawers? Frame & Panel side...

Part 2: Rails and things

07-27-2017 11:33 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Still playing catch-up…...rails.. First, needed to plane away the saw marks, and get them all about the same size.. As it turned out, the plank the main rails came from, was almost a 1/16” thicker than the stiles. Back into the vise they went. The Stanley No.4c was able to remove the unwanted stuff, fairly easily. And no tear out, even across a knot.. The top rail will wait for a bit. The bottom rail will need a single groove milled, the other three main rails ge...

Part 3: Stiles,aka corner posts

07-28-2017 12:00 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Ok, earlier, I had resawn a 4/4 plank into four “posts” ......not the best looking ones on the block…lots of saw marks, and wavy cut lines. I used these items to correct a few things….the metal yard stick is a Tinner’s Rule. Nice if you made tin cans for a living. Calls out every size needed to make whatever container you’d need….also makes a nice straightedge.. Has more waves than the Navy….the other edge was quite as bad.. Ther...

Part 4: Stile number two

07-28-2017 02:38 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Finally caught up…..I wanted to at least get Stile number 2 done…..or close to it, before the thumb called a halt. This one did have a decent edge, just needed the saw marks removed.. But,,,the other edge needed a lot of work, which made a lot of shavings. I tried to use the Stanley No.8 , could not get a decent grip on it. Went with the 0-7 again. The good edge barely needed any work.. So I decided to use that for the groove. Tried it while still in the crochet...

Part 5: Feeling groovy...

07-29-2017 03:05 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

And a few other things…..worked in the shop for two sessions…..about 2-3 hours worth…Was trying to get the last two stiles S4S…...Jointer plane was taking a bit too long….hogged the worst off with the bandsaw, then used the planes to finish things up. Had one good edge on each, decided I could add a groove.. I tried to use the Crochet and leg vise…..found out this way was a better better….Made a lot of these.. “Noodles”? Got both ...

Part 6: Raising Panels, bad Sunday, Good Monday..

08-01-2017 03:43 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Well, Sunday, I thought I could get something done…..got too distracted, tried to do too many things at once.. Built a jig to use for raising the panels…..I even got one panel finished ( I thought) up…..even tried a dry fit with the panel…. Did not go well….got a few other panels cut to size.. And a few needing to be cut down… Things were piled up, could not focus on one task….gave up, and closed the shop. Went out Rust Hunting, instead&...

Part 7: Panels, a glue up, mortises...busy day..

08-02-2017 02:39 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

had a couple Honey-do items to do, then down to the shop…got the rest of the raised panels done, and one other fixed. It needed a back bevel to fit the grooves better.. Same as the other day. Stashed these with their rails…parts for Side #1? Well since the bench was cleaned off, might as well try a glue up… Applying all those clamps and parts into a solid pile…..with a busted thumb…..makes me dread the next one…Laid out the parts for Side #2,,,...

Part 8: Another glue up, and some web frames

08-03-2017 07:14 PM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Ok, this one will be a long-winded one….I managed to get the second side all glued up.. Took the clamps off this morning,,,,might need them later.Set up a saw on the bench.. As I needed a few parts cut up, to make web-frames… Extra hand to hold while I saw. Needed 10 pieces @ 3/4×2 x 24” ( the 2” is about 1-1/2”) Set these aside, needed 10 pc. @ 11-1/4” long, and a a bunch of 3/4×3/4 kicker stock.. These two were fine as is.. ...

Part 9: Case work, finally

08-06-2017 02:54 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Right after Lunch, today..snuck down to the shop…intending to at least get the last two web-frames done… First one had a problem… Should hold it flat, until the glue dries. As for the LAST frame.. Finally done with building frames. This one will be the bottom frame. The two kickers are not to keep drawers from tipping, these two back up the bottom face frame piece. keeps toes from kicking things out of place… Got the two side panels gathered up̷...

Part 10: Face frame follies

08-08-2017 06:12 PM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Sunday was a Road Trip….thought I would try Monday to do a little work in the shop.. Got three parts for face frame rails dovetailed. Needed to run the jointer over them to get them all to match each other…Fighting clamps while doing this, is not fun… Thought I’d get a bit fancy with the wider top rail…. But, when I went the chop out the matching pins….they merely broke off….Grrrr Tried the sockets for the main rails.. Which meant lif...

Part 11: Top is done..

08-10-2017 02:34 AM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

With a surprise ending, too….Got bored, decided to try the plank for the top…4/4×13-1/8” x 49” long…..heavier than it looked, awkward going down the steps to the shop…. After cutting off a chunk to get to a length for the case…..I thought I could not only flatten the slab out a bit, but get it close to 3/4” thick…...wasn’t happening on the thickness part, but I at least got it almost flat.. Width-wise, was too narrow. Wal...

Part 12: Drawer Wars

08-16-2017 04:01 AM by bandit571 | 1 comment »

Always seem to be a fight during the first drawer build…..if it has been a while between builds… Ok, more of a catch up on how things are going….both on the thumb, and the project X-rays this morning show thumb has healed….been in the splint a bit too long….NOW I get to loosen it up to where it will bend like new, again….to do that, it was back to the shop today.. Ok, Drawers: Laid out a few drawer fronts… These were the “easy ones...

Part 13: More drawer, and other follies...

08-21-2017 01:19 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Again, more of a catching up…. Decided to try to add the plywood back to the case…..on a Monday? Usual stuff went on… I was just going to get a measurement on what size of a panel I needed to cut out of the 4’ x 4’ panel….was.. One thing led to another,,,,,had to lay the panel ON the dinning room table to mark out two lines needing cut….wound up outside on the patio, using a roll-around cooler as a bench, to saw the panel out….grrrrr ...

Part 14: More drawers....almost done

08-22-2017 02:39 AM by bandit571 | 0 comments »

Well, I was only going to go to the shop, to remove those three pipe clamps…...Yeah…right…Monday, or no Monday…things were going to get done…. Pipe clamps came off….wrestled with the drawer for awhile….Walnut strips were added, and the two knobs installed…drawer is back in some clamps.. Just slightly different ones. Got the Drawer #2 all cleaned up, since those clamps came off of it….and stashed it in the case.. Which left Draw...

Part 15: Last drawer, and a PIP

08-24-2017 07:48 PM by bandit571 | 2 comments »

Ok….needed to get the last drawer DONE.. Wasn’t happy with the sides I had stash back for this drawer. Cut two sides from the maple plank the front and back came from. Atkins crosscutsaw’s turn, as I try to rotate the saws through a job. Jointer planes to get things all the same width. Drawer front and both sides need ripped to width. Marked a few lines around, got out the usual suspects, as I had ran a saw on the ends.. As usual, pins get done first, then t...
