no previous part Part 1 of Pine tool box, Stanley Style series Part 2: Dovetails, story of two saws »

Well, while going through the local Menards Store, went over and dug through there Value Wood rack…they were selling 1×10s and 1×12s, all under 3’ long. Picked through to get the clearer stuff. Wound up with five boards, for $1.69 each..

And, since the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up was “off-line” had to actually draw something on paper..

About as close to an actual “plan” as I get. Even drew a “page 2”

Wore out the pencil, even. Dug around, found a sharpener to keep down in the shop..

The old metal tool box has seen better days…

The thing is so full of small hand tools, I can barely lift it. So, laid out some lines, and did some cross cutting

Cordless saw. Got two blanks to work with

Then laid out some bevels. Cut those on the bandsaw, then clamped them up, and planed the cut edges smooth and flush with each other..

I still needed these sitting out. Marked how far up the sides of these ends the “sides” will go, and the bevel they will need. I was able to get two sides out of a plank. Ripped on the bandsaw, but it needed planed straight along an edge

Marked the bevels needed

Then I had to carry the line down one side. To actually cut the bevel, needed that big old plane again..

Just hold it at the angle of the bevel, and plane the edge’s corner down until the line is cut, almost. Got both sides beveled….then check for length…..hmmm, a bit too long, crosscut to 20” in length

Then a test fit of sorts on the bench’s top…

That should do for now. next up? Through dovetails need to be done, to join the corners. Might look better than a butt joint with screws or nails? Stay tuned….

Looks great. Gotta love value wood. You sure are turning the scrap pile into something nice though.
