A Project for June.. #13: Clean up, start on lid

All the clamps for the cleats came off…those glue joints were then cleaned up….80 grit sander. The corner joints on the ends of the box were next…

Sit a wood block on the floor under the bench vise,,,set the box into the vise…hand plane and sanders to clean, and level the corner joints…to the point they almost disappear…...repeat for the other end….

while the box was no longer sitting on the tablesaw…changed out the blades..

What was left of the “old” blade…was starting to burn it’s way through cuts..not good. measured out for the length of the plywood panel…and tried out the new blade..

Then mark for width..set up the rip fence…..buzz through that cut….test fit was a tad wide….#62 to skim a bit out the edges, same with the length….try the test fit, again..

Just about right….lay a bead of glue all along the cleats..and lay the panel down..

Mooshed down into the glue..add 14 screws to keep the panel in place….4 on the front and back, 3 on each end..done with the tablesaw, for now….didn’t trust the floor…so..

It can sit here, for a while…..hauled a few planks to the shop…one of the first 3 had too much bark along one edge…went from a 1×6 down to a 1×4…..Brought another plank down to the shop….laid the 3 “good” planks on top of the box….moved around to avoid split ends, big knots..that sort of thing.

Can’t use the tablesaw…we have ways…

Laid out a few cut lines….clamped to the end of the bench….

saw was still shaking a bit….

Nice, old comfy handsaw….then lay the cut planks back on the box…

Will need to joint the edges, and get these ready for glue and clamps..and cauls…..will become a raised panel for the lid of this box….need to make a collar to house it, also…..MIGHT be able to get 2 or 3 parts of that collar out of the barky board….we’ll see..
