« Part 3: Glue-ups.. Part 4 of Aromatic Red Cedar Box, from scraps series Part 5: getting the tray..done »

Spread out over a couple days…to get the hardware installed, that had nails….I don’t like nailing this stuff, as it will split IF you look at it wrong…we have ways..

Spares box…that HUGE screw? Happens to be a #6 drywall screw, 1-5/8” long. Screws are laying there. Figured I could drill pilot holes for those. The little screws did not fit through the brass openings….so, a second drill was needed…

Goodell Pratt Co. No.329 for the pilot holes, Blue Stanley to drill the clearance holes in the brass…..Can in handy, as two holes in the hinges were way to close to the rim of the box….as in “Missed it by that much, Chief” a hole was drilled a bit lower down.

Lid was thin, almost too thin…as the sharp points of the screws poked through to the inside….sanded those pointy things down flush…Same with the latch..

Box has a seal coat of varnish. Needed to be hand sanded smooth, later.

The more I looked at the lid’s front….the more it looked like it needed a bra….decided to reduce that a bit…bandsaw to rough out a new “profile”....then..

Where the little #101 plane couldn’t get to…a sharp chisel could..

Looking less “Dolly Parton-ish” Also, used the pilot hole drill, to drill through the cedar edge, and barely start into the Poplar bottom panel…

Drive a brass plated nail down until flush. 3 per side.

Start of a tray..

That will be in the next, exciting episode…
Stay tuned….
