« Part 10: Out of the clamps, off with it's lid Part 11 of Back to building boxes series Part 12: Boxes need labels? »

The next trip to the shop…meant an insert to hold not only the plane in place, it also had to hold the depth stop, it’s bolt, the fence and it’s rod in place….placed a pine board into the bottom of the box. Did not have to fill it all the way, as a bit will be bandsawn away…placed the plane in the box..traced around the plane….cut the waste out…test fit…repeat as needed until.
.
It would fit without any rattling around…

Next…decided the bolt for the fence would help lock things in place….needed to drill a hole for it through the pine insert…so..

It turns out that a #9 drill bit is about the right size…so I used the cordless drill…drilling from both faces of the insert…

Makes for a nice clean hole. Next a trench was chiseled out…not very deep, just about half the diameter of the fence’s rod…

The idea being the fence will keep it in the trench…the rest of the parts needed screwed in place…

Rotate the depth stop to press the fence against the back wall of the box…depth stop bolt to keep the fence from turning away…..insert can then be glued in place, with the plane to help line things up…

Sit out of the way for a bit, to let the glue set up…and I can start on the hinges on the lid…

One of these days, I just might get the hang of installing hinges. Had to offset this hinge…made the other one match that…otherwise, it would look..off. glue had dried enough that I could attempt to attach to the box..

And, that be the drill for the pilot holes…closed up the lid, sat the box into the vise…...hmmm, needed a hammer-adjust…and the front also had an “overbite” going on….we have ways..

Leveled surface makes it easier to attach the latch….

And, while I was at it, I added the brass corners…with better sized, and headed screws (so they don’t poke through to the inside) and a look at the hinge side..

And, with the lid opened up…

Then stack the 2 boxes up…

Those “numbers” exist only in this computer, they are not on the boxes…decided to give them a coat of the “Infamous Witch’s Brew” stain…

and…opened up…

and, a better look at that insert, right after the final cuts were made?

Waiting on the stain to finishing drying out, see IF it needs a second coat….letting the insides air out.

Working on labels, for now…
Stay tuned, almost done..
