« Part 8: Rebates? Part 9 of Back to building boxes series Part 10: Out of the clamps, off with it's lid »

Ok..just 2.5 hours Saturday….Wanted to get that Pine panel ready to go…needed flattened, first…

Millers Falls No.9, Type 4….last of the “Good” types made….made a bit of a mess on the floor..

Got that all cleaned up. Next, all four sides need a groove…set up a jig…

Fine tuned the Stanley No.45 a bit..panel was thinner, so I needed the groove a bit higher…
Had to remember to double check the depth…

As one of the end parts had a high spot, right where the plane started the cut…

Which I found out about, while fitting the next steps…rebates on the panel…reset the jig, re-worked the high spot down to match the rest of the grooves.

Rebates?

Needed to run a rebate all around the panel, to fit in the grooves…Got out the Ward’s #78, as it’s spur works better…should have left that line….as I found out….wound up bringing in a full crew..

Once the end grain was done, was a simple task to rebate the long grain sides. Craftsman #3720 was just about the right plane…had to adjust the fence a bit…rebates were getting too wide…

Dry fit…then a brush to moosh the glue all around the pins…then a few cauls and a forest of clamps…trying to keep things square… 1/2 of the clamps were to clamp the plywood bottom panel down into it’s bed of glue…

Well..there goes the neighborhood….let the glue dry a day….

I did remember to mark, on the outside, where to make the saw cut to split the lid off….once the box is out of the clamps, and cleaned up….

Stay tuned..them clamps have to leave..sometime…

I can see a few bits of wood through the forest of clamps…
