« Part 4: Got one end done.. Part 5 of July, Frame & Panel Box Project series Part 6: Clamps removed, panel cleaned up, slips installed »

And then cleaned up and….and….another glue up?

Remember this thing? Gaps have been addressed…Panel does fit a bit better ( saw blade width too long, was causing that gap)...Decided to try me luck gluing it all together…

One c clamp was thrown away…chased a couple parts across the bench…one even “escaped” to the floor….like it or not, this WAS getting glued up! Let this thing sit overnight…...

Next day…clamps came off…glue joints needed a little cleaning up..

Both faces..then the top edge…

wasn’t quite square across….we have ways….next, this needed tongues milled…

Same as before….4 passes on each end…..Then a dryfit ( no fat tongue, this time..)

No glue, this time….but, get out the needed clamps. Set a sheet of plywood on the tablesaw, I wanted a flat surface to assemble this thing. Brushed the glue on the Tongues, assembled the box sitting on it’s top edges…C clamps to pull the 2 halves of the feet together…needed one extra, as one was out of flat….

Then, CAREFULLY turn this mess over onto it’s own 4 feet…checked for square…...add a diagonal clamp (18” long) to pull things into square…and add the last 2 clamps..whew..

Fun part will be later today, when all those clamps come off..

Anyway, still had a bit of that 1 hour shop time left…

Which brings this up…panel is too long, and too narrow….I also did not want that defect…just so happened, that is was in the area I was going to cut off. The 2 narrow strips? Will get glued onto the panel…to get me the required width…First, trim the panel..

Plenty of room, doesn’t take all that many strokes of the saw…and..no need to “shoot” the edges for square..

When it comes right off the saw nice and square…spread some glue onto the 2 strips…moosh them around a bit, until they stick in place long enough to add some clamps…

The 3 c clamps are holding a caul, to keep that end flat….vise ( 3rd hand?) is keeping the other end flat…

Took Friday off from the shop ( felt good..) so, maybe today..I can hide out in the shop, away from Honey-dos..

Need to build the frame for the lid, and fit the panel to it…Panel will need to be planed flat. Grooves to house the panel need done…Got all afternoon?

Stay tuned
