« Part 3: Started on the sides Part 4 of Ladder for Towels? series Part 5: Sunday, a quick shop visit »

Need a way to attach the treads/rungs to the sides….figured a wedged through tenon will work, but..the lay out is a bit..different..

Treads will sit parallel to a floor….the ladder will lean towards a wall at 12 degrees. Ladder sides splay out at 12 degrees…makes a mortise a bit tricky to lay out and chop..so..

Needs to be something like this….but, the other side needs to match up …

Then carry the lines round to the other face…one edge at a time..

And trust they all line up..

Then mark where the tenon will go, hopefully it will be centered..

MK 1 Eyeball….and the tenon is supposed to come out..

Where that little red spot is….round up the “Usual Suspects”..

We have work to do….
1st mortise…chop 1/2 way down, from the “show side”..

Then flip over and complete the mortise….lines on the sides are a guide as to the angle that needs chopped to.

Then dry fit…

Made the mistake, of standing this up, to see how the “ladder” will sit on the floor….

It didn’t…both sides need their feet cut at a compound miter….Maybe when the mortises are done?
First 3 were soon chopped…

Took a short break….Pee Break, Gatorade Break, and resharpen a chisel or three..

Bandsaw is Multi-tasking…ok, two more to go..

Sharper chisels working much better than ones than bounce off of Ash…so…

One side is all choppered up….time to trade that Gatorade in for something a bit stronger, after 3 hours IN the shop…

I think it is time for a Guinness Extra Stout….

Stay tuned, will try to get the other 5 mortises chopped, this afternoon?
