« Part 12: Dividers, and some work on the lids Part 13 of Boxes from Red Cedar series Part 14: Wrapping things up, second coat is on...PIP »

Yet another Laundry Detail….have to wait around down there for the washer to get done…and change over to the dryer…and since I’m already done in the Woodshop…....Clamps were removed and put away….glue joints were sanded smooth

Couple of dimples from the small c clamps to sand out….top bar needed to be flush with the top of the “peak” end wasn’t…we have ways..

Old Stanley No. 3, Type 11….does a nice job….and…it will be busy today..

had to “shoot” the ends a bit…better fit…then the angles needed adjusted a bit….mainly at the top…to keep this lid in place, while I worked on the other lid…

Problem with Cedar…if you look at at it will split…Moved the screw location a tiny bit….a proper pilot hole was drilled for the rest of these screws…...cut the head of of a small nail, chuck it into a drill….same with the latch, except the screws needed a wipe of candle wax…so I don’t snap the brass screw’s head off..

Lid #2…already had one angle done….needed the other planed, until things fit…

I supposed i could have used the speed square for the angles….but, things are a bit too small,,,,got tired of chasing the box across the bench…so

Enlisted a pair of Helping Hands….while I installed the hinges….and the latch….latches are off-set , and sit beside each other….be kind of a bad spot to have fingers gripping a handle..

So, now they are on the ends…one on each end….trying to get them centered, and match each other…since the box had already been sanded down, and wiped down…decided to add a “seal coat” to the outside of the box…

Need to find a pull ring to lock the latches in place…first off…need to allow the seal coat to dry a day..

The sand it all down to 320 grit, and then add the next coat…..haven’t decided on the insides, just yet….

may get out the Branding iron, and heat things up…..

Question being…where to place the brand at….under the bottom of the box…inside the lids….Hmmmm…not sure how well Cedar “brands”.....may have to do a test run?

Stay tuned…almost done….

Ahh. That’s where the latches go. I was wondering if the hinges would go on the peak so the lids would auto-close with an assist from gravity.

If it was me, I’d put the brand on each side of the lid. That way it shows off more.
