« Part 6: Laundry Detail = Dovetails Part 7 of Boxes from Red Cedar series Part 8: and, back to building a box »

The hardest part of cleaning the tray up..

Was trying to hold it still, without snapping a handle off….This was “OK’ for the ends..

But this seemed to work better for the longer sides….Planed to match the sides to the bottom panel, then round the edges a bit….Dremel with a sanding drum was run around inside the handles a bit, smoothing out the rough areas, and a bit of round-over….other areas used a cordless variety…

Sanded things down to 320 grit…wiped it all clean….mixed up some Poly, and grabbed a brush….this was about to get…messy…

Then on the second try….and no cracks, this time….

A sheet of Plexiglass was laid down into the still wet varnish….and then I let everything dry overnight….thinking about posting this tray as a project…..while I start on the next box of Cedar…

Still have quite a bit to make…something with….stay tuned..

Nice! I sometimes get lazy trying to clean up fragile things with a plane and just take it to the belt sander. 60 grit will take off the dovetails that are sticking out pretty quick…
