no previous part Part 1 of Blind Dovetails? series Part 2: day 2...a little better »

Was just sitting around, one day, watching a bit of Roy Underhill’s The Woodwright’s Shop on Youtube. He had Chris Schwarz on, talking about building “Campaign Furniture” episode 1….when Chris showed how to make the corner joints used in the casework….before all the brass parts were added. Called it a Full Blind Dovetail.

Wasn’t doing any projects at the moment, hmmm…maybe give those a try….would be something different to learn?

So, a search through the scrap pile…found a nasty Pine 1×6….screwholes on one edge, big knot on the other. Maybe IF I rip the bad off…leaving a 1×4? bandsaw to try to follow the lines..almost…

Used the mitrebox to cut the ends to 6” or so..

Then cut the remainder into 2 equal parts…Bandsaw left a wavy edge, so

Finally got to the point, all 4 parts were in the vise, getting jointed so they matched each other in width…next?
well, I could be like Chris Schwarz, and get out my skewed rebate plane….which I do not have…we have ways

Marked out the 1/4” x 1/2” rebate….mitre box to saw the shoulder cuts…..then other to the bench vise..

Mallet and a wide chisel, to remove the waste….repeat for the other 3 ends of the longer sides…

Then some lay out. the parts with the rebates will get “Pins” milled…

1/2 pin, couple full pins, 1/2 pin…turn this around, so I can see what I’m sawing…

Saw with the Disston #68 as much as I could. Then thay Red Devil putty knife was driven down into each kerf…then set up a way to chop out the waste..

Knife does knife walls….then, use thes pins, to lay out the tails (3)

Just like the pin board…these are NOT through dovetail tails….they also have a 1/4” floor…idea being that when the joint gets closed up…

It should look like this…and..

This. Inside?

Hopefully a little better than this one….

That does it for Day #1 of the Dovetail Class….Day #2 was a bit better…

Stay tuned….3 more corners to do….might get better as I go along…I hope.

Pretty cool how you are learning new methods of doing things.
