« Part 3: Dovetails... Part 4 of Tap & Die Box build series Part 5: A day at the drill press? »

Well….played around in the shop this morning…had 3 grooves to finish up…

Seemed to be making a lot of “noodles”...

To where the Stanley 45 was filled up…

And I’d have to stop to clear the plane….test fit, to see how the grooves would line up..

Close enough….Ok, change the 45 over to hold a wider cutter…

Goal was to plough a groove to hold a 1/2” thick “shelf” in which to hold 10 dies..will stash #11 and #12 in the wrenches….Cutter is a No. 18…should have used the next size up….Use the bench dogs to hold the 2×2 in place…one in the bench, one in the vise…

Set up the 45..longer rods this time around…short ones were too short…and try to center it on the 2×2..

And make some wide noodles…

Although the test scrap did fit…

Turned out, it was thinner than the piece I was going to use…groove was also not centered, and it leaned a bit

First I thought I could just router things flat….nope…then turn the 2×2 around, and ran the 45 along the other edge..made the groove centered, if a hair wider (about a 1/16”..) then the router could clean it up….test fit will the “shelf” board….nope, too tight….I and just crosscut, and then ripped a blank. edges needed jointed..

Board was a hair too thick, surface was a tad rough, so…

Then try again…

Then the other 2×2..

Then set this into the box…test for how much room there will be..

But, at least the Dies will fit..

Got out the drill bit set…to see what size I need for the Dies..

1” Forstner bit….

Just have to step off for 10 spots…

I also used that rehabbed Framing Square to mark out for the bottom panel…was the right size to cut on the bandsaw…

12-1/8” x 7-1/8” x 1/4”....Not sure IF I’ll get a glue up, tomorrow…have a lot of holes to drill, first, and decide about a lid..
Stay tuned…
