« Part 1: Needs a box? Part 2 of Tap & Die Box build series Part 3: Dovetails... »

At least it was a “3 hour tour”. Hauled the 2×2 to the shop, then the 7 planks ( No, Snow White was not involved) of 1/2” x 5-1/2” x 24” Poplar. Sorted through the stack, found two interesting ones…

Intend to make 2 boxes..might be enough here for 2 lids? Hmmm….set these 2 aside, which left the other 5 sitting on the bench…all were supposed to be 24” long…..

Right!!!!!. Picked through these, to find the best of the bunch….Will use 2 for the main box build, so they had to be at least close to matching each other, grain wise…then set the remaining three aside, out of the way.

Plan is to cut the 2×2 into 3 pieces, to provide “racks” to drill and stick taps in….36” divide by 3 =? Not quite..First cut was made…on the Mitersaw..

Then the second cut in the middle of the rest of the 2×2…..hmmm, well, ganged all three up, back into the saw again, ends were flush out on the free end, soon to be matched with the sawn end…

So, I had the 3 blanks

So now I can figure out how long to make the front and back….and the 2 ends. Allowed for the 1/2” on each end that the through dovetails would require….marked one plank, and over to the cordless Mitersaw, again..

Repeat for the other “front/back” cut…..stack the remains/cut-offs on the saw….trim them both to just under 8” length. Then lay out some toys..

I had hoped that piece of 1/4” plywood would have been large enough to use as the bottom of the box….usual luck…..too small by an inch or so….save it for a smaller box..( had to go out to Lowes, anyway..picked up a 1/4” x 2’ x 2’ Luann Plywood panel…) There was one other needed tool for doing dovetails…

I do joinery work while sitting down….

Spent the rest of the 3 hour day trying to get a couple corners done…

So I could see how the racks will fit…

Gaps will get “fillers” at least to hold the Dirty Dozen of Dies May leave the other as is, to better hold the wrenches.

Next episode will be all about those dovetails…..( Pins first, BTW)
Stay tuned for Sunday’s 3 hour tour….

Wrong kind of taps….?

Kind of pricey…will do in a pinch…

I think will just have to do…
