« Part 8: Saturday in the Dungeon Part 9 of Kitchen Island Project series Part 10: A door and a start on a drawer »

Sunday was too busy elsewhere, to go to the shop…and, even though the shop is closed on Mondays…had to get things moving….Had three panels, sitting around all clamped up, and doing nothing but taking up floor space..so…

Largest of the 3 was still sitting on my tablesaw…removed to clamps, trimmed the ends square, width was a hair too wide. Surfaced the better looking of the 2 faces flat, and as smooth as I could get it. Then a bit of glue, and some clamps..

Glued to the legs only, this closes the end of the Island’s door compartment. Since I needed those clamps removed from the smaller 2 panels…

One was trimmed to size. It also needed a rebate milled…

So the back panel will wrap around the divider….more glue and clamps…mainly to the divider..

And the back of the compartment is now closed off.

Both the blank for the drawer and the back of the island needed trimmed for length…back needed a tight fight, the drawer…not too tight.. There is a 1 x rail above the drawer….I needed to find the exact center…and lay out for a dovetail socket, and chop out a 3/8” deep socket….

I clamped the drawer front in place, to “back up” the rail, while I chopped….somewhere, I picked up a 1/4” long cut on the side of a finger?
Where the “kicker” goes across to the back of the island, needed a second such socket….this time, I used the vise on the bench…

So, now I could glue the back into place…

And glue the kicker in place, too…

Then I made the other 2 corner brackets…and drilled and counter-sunk all 4..

Then install with screws, and glue..

Then the other corner were done….thinner ones were for over the drawer front.

Haven’t decided on which way the drawer front will look the best, yet. I place the last panel on the bench….

This will get made into the door. It will also get a rebate, to wrap around the divider’s edge….Hinges will be on the leg side….needs flattened and trimmed to size, and the rebate milled. Swept the floor…

And called it a day….about 3 hours worth….Letting things sit a day….
Stay tuned….
