« Part 2: A Top, a bottom, a holder Part 3 of A NEW, Improved Saw Til series Part 4: 2 more corners, last rebate, and other things »

Having other “Issues” going on last couple days….was finally able to get a little shop time in….about 2-1/2 hours worth. Went out and bought a 2’ x 4’ sheet of 1/4” Pine plywood…and a new bandsaw blade…

Got out the case with the “Special” planes…

Yes, there is supposed to be 3 planes in here…later on, there will be just one….The Wards #78 was out and about..

Set up to plow a 1/2” wide rebate along the back edges of the case, to house that plywood panel. Set the depth to match the thickness of the plywood…..First rebate was to be a bit rough…

No way is that big old knot going to the front of the case, too many problems, that way. At least the 78’s iron was sharpened up, after the last use..

Block plane was around, to remove any fuzzies….one rebate done. Set this aside, and make it’s matching rebate along the other case side….which left doing the bottom of the case….but, first..some dovetails..

Laid out the pins, on the end of the side marked “B” for bottom. Backsaw to make a few cuts…angles were set with an old bevel gauge..

Rosewood, Brass, & Steel…doesn’t get any better. Then clamp the blank down on the bench…

Chop about halfway down, and halfway back….need a little out on the end, for support, because I then flip this over, and finish the chopping…

Circled area? I want to cover that end of the rebate….means a little extra cuts….once I use the pins to lay out the tails…and the fancy cut on the corner…..bandsaw to make a few cuts…

Note the corner? Then chisel out the waste….and then a dry fit..

Laying on it’s side…bottom panel still has a bit of cup to it…..will flatten out during the glue up.

Bottom panel was a hair wider than the side panel….imagine that…we have ways..

Millers Falls No. 11…...about 10 swipes, to get the two boards the same width..floor was getting hard to walk on, lots of “Krunchies” laying there…both from the 78 and the dovetails….swept three piles like this..

And they do crunch when you walk on them. 3 rebates done, 1 to go. 1 corner dovetailed, 3 to go..
Look like tomorrow is planned out….then see about 4 dados that do not go all the way through….they stop after about 3” or so….

Stay tuned….
