« Part 2: Start on a corner Part 3 of A new til for the hand planes series Part 4: Shelves, and a glue up »

Shopping trip today….seems someone at Lowes has no idea what size boards go into what rack. When I bought that stack of 1×10s, and a pair of 1×4s….according to the labels of the rack…..turns out the 1×4s are 1×6….the 1×10s are 1×8s…..So, when I picked up a single 1×10 today….something didn’t look right….too late now…case will be made with the 1×8s ( $2 cheaper, anyway…) Normally, I buy 5mm Luann plywood for cabinet backs….today, the ONLY 1/4” x 4’ x 4’ plywood was …Pine….and a lot thicker than 5mm….had them free cut the panel so I’d have one edge at 30”. Fit in the van better, too.

Wasn’t happy with the “Tails first” approach….didn’t like how lines transferred….so…bad to Pins first….even so, there was a LOT of lines to saw, today.

As I had the other 3 corners to get done. Was also trying to avoid any “Brain Phartes” of mis-marking which set of lines went where. Came close a couple times…Once a set of pins WAS sawn….then the chopping began..

I chop about half way on one face, leaving a tab for support, while I flip the board over, and finish the chopping

Chisel also trimmed a few lines the saw missed…Then stand this board up on the end of the “tail board” SHARP pencil to mark around all the pins…then the bandsaw to make a bunch of cuts…

Then chop out the waste. Bandsaw stayed on the waste side of the lines, leaving the lines. I can always shave a bit off, for a better fit..The a dry fit…this is for corner #3..

Made sure I labeled which parts went where. Will help during a glue-up, later. Chips were flying off of the parts, either bouncing off of me, or the washing machine behind me…spent most of the afternoon sitting on my…shop stool…

finally, the fourth and last corner was dry fitted…

So this thing was set over where it will call home..

With a couple Pine pads to sit on. Ready for the shelves, next. Will work on those tomorrow. swept the floor, put the tools away, closed up the Cabinet. Got the router set up with a dovetail bit…need to find the edge guide, where ever it got tossed to. Have to line up the sides for dovetail sockets, for the shelves to slide into. Edge guide is for making a dovetail on the ends of the shelves. Might as well do all 5 at a time, on both ends.

Only noise in the shop today? Chisels being whacked, cussing, a backsaw being used, cussing….that was about it..
Tomorrow MIGHT get a lot louder…
Stay tuned….
