no previous part Part 1 of A new til for the hand planes series Part 2: Start on a corner »

Had to happen…I build a new Tool Cabinet for the rest of the hand tools….and now the hand planes are feeling “Neglected”...

The til beside them USED to be full of hammers, they have since moved over to the new “house”. So….bought some more 1×10s, and some 1×4s….First, I need to know how big to build what, and where. Hammer til was removed and sent to the firepit. Planes IN the til got moved out….the bigger ones to a couple pine pads…

Pair of #6s, and a pair of #7s…..the medium sized ones found a shelf to move into..

As for these little guys..

Not sure it is safe, leaving them all bunched up like this…liable to come back to find 14 sitting there.
Which left this..

Some of the smaller stops were just held on with a few screws, no glue…..the rest was glued in place. Kept the screws I could remove. and moved this out of the way, for now.

Because I needed to find out where the door from the tool cabinet would swing through at…without the old til in the way. Held a sharpie down at the bottom corner of the door, and swing the door a few times. Made a mark..

So…as long as I stay outside of that curved line… I don’t need the plane til all the way out to the edge…so it can sit back a bit. Then needed to know how far to the right I could reach…was hoping for 36”..

Could only reach to about 30” biggie. Will also need to sit this til up on 1” pads, to get clearance over the top of the bench. So..something like this?

The old til? There is a plan for it….rotate so the wider base is sticking up, split the thing in two, hinge the two “doors” to the front of the Saw Til…and enclose the open end to go over the top of the til, as a dust cover.

So…a Plan is needed? Had Moose & Squirrel Express deliver a plan, from the Single Brain Cell Sketch Up….

laid out shelves to sit the planes on, about 5-3/4” apart. Area at the bottom will be for 3 drawers. Case will stand 37-1/2” tall, by 30” wide. ! x 10s for the sides, top, bottom, shelves…and 2 dividers between the drawers.
Through dovetails at the 4 corners, sliding dovetails for the shelves and dividers.

Will build the case first, including a 1/4” plywood back…then work on the two doors, and 3 drawers. Plexiglass for the doors, so I can see the planes inside. May use the same latches as the Tool Cabinet on the doors. Drawers will not be covered by the doors…will put a stick of molding between them…

Right now? I need to haul a few boards to the shop, and make a few crosscuts….

Stay tuned….
