« Part 2: Dovetails, grooves, and a raised panel... Part 3 of A box for a router plane series Part 4: Pip time.. »

When last seen, the box was all clamped up…waiting on glue to dry a day…

Today, after Lunch…clamps came off. needed to clean the ends a bit..

Just the ends, and had to be careful around that end grain…then set up the Stanley 45, to plough the outside grooves, in hope I hit the inside ones half way…raised the fence a bit….and set it to the lines I make before the glue up….

Went all the way around the outside…then tried to knife the lid off….hmmm, seems the inside grooves were not deep enough….Reset the fence on the tablesaw…ran the box through on all four sides, cutting 3/4” deep…trimmed the sliver out of the lid…tried the fit…nope. seal part was too thick, now…we have ways..

Reset the fence on the 45, to pass under the cutter a bit….then a few passes to thin the seal…test fitting until it did fit…Lid had an “issue” corner had came apart…dab of glue, and a clamp or two…

Vise holds it one way, blue clamp the other…let this sit a while…as for the inside of the box…

A block to hold the cutters was glued in place…then drilled to match the 3/8” cutter. Made sure I didn’t drill too far..the way my luck was today…I’d wind up going out the bottom of the box..

That should do it. Tried the router plane out a bit…with the 1/2” cutter installed…had a few high spots to level out..

Seemed to work…trie to fit it into the box….thumbscrew was too long….grinder shortened it , and restored the point on the end….pine blocks I was going to use..were too tall…cut a couple runners from some 1/4” scrap plywood…then tried the fit of the plane…

It do fit nicely!....Dug around for some hinges…found a few in a baggy, with screws, no less…set out a couple..

I think these will do. need to go and buy a latch, later. Made a mess of crunchies on the floor again..

That #45 does make a mess…I think this will do, for a day…waiting on the glue to dry, again…
stay tuned….almost done…
