« Part 10: Rebates, and a glue up Part 11 of DVD Cabinet of Ash series no next part

Door came out of the clamps ok. But, you would not think it would be so hard to fit a door….grrr, cussing began right away…

Trouble began when I laid the door on the case….bottom of the door fitted up nicely with the sides…but, as I went up the sides…case seemed to “flair out” a bit….seemed the two shelves had bowed the sides out….Made a few marks, and planed and belt sanded until the sides matched the edges of the door…

Once things were lined up, I ran a 3/8” round-over bit around the outside edges of the door

Then began the task of installing the hinges…

Hammer and chisel…mortise the edge of the case ( not needed in the door). Item in the hinge…set the hinge where it needs to be, couple whacks with a hammer, to make a centered pilot hole for each screw…test drive?

Seemed to work. Dug out a plug cutter ( Veritas 3/8” Tapered cutter) and installed it in my Harbor Freight Drill press

Had to slow the drill press all the way down, else the bit would burn the Walnut..

Plugs. Screwdriver to snap a plug out, bead of glue around the narrow end of the plug, drive in with the hammer, trim flush with the chisel. Had the 60-1/2 block plane handy, if needed…Stand the case up…

Plugs and hinge details…front view?

Everything sanded smooth…decided to add a coat of “Gunstock” stain….and a coat of Amber Shellac once the stain had dried..

Bit of a change? Tried using the flash from the camera..
That side view, again?

And open the door ( that flash again..grrr)

May give this a coat or two more of Shellac? Went to add a latch….could find any IN the shop….May have a fancy handle….if it needs one.

Build part of this is now done…just a few finishing touches left.

Thanks for following along..

Nice looking cabinet.

Paul Sellers has recently shown an interesting trick about wooden plugs on his instagram.

Well done bandit

I wouldn’t worry about a handle, once you put all the DVDs in and close the door you may never open it again!

Top Job too!
