« Part 2: Flatten the curves Part 3 of DVD Cabinet of Ash series Part 4: Dados, shelves....glue and clamps..and a back »

Dovetails. For some reason, I do pins first…then the tails…was trying to cut around a few bad spots in the “pin board”

Wasn’t much to do with this end of the board, a rebate will go along that edge…however, on the other end..

Tried to get the waste areas laid out as tails…so I could chop away at them better…

Trying to either split the lines, or just miss to the waste side of the lines…finally got both ends sawn and chopped..

Then, mark things on the pin and tail boards as to “inside”(IN) and front (F) and back (B) Then stand the pin board straight up….to where it will go on one of the case’s sides….line the edges up, using my chin to press down on the tail board. Run a sharp pencil around the pins….I can look down the side board, one hand to keep alignment, the other to mark things out….remove the pin board…finish the marking out. Bandsaw to cut the waste….leaving the lines.

Chop the waste out, and try a dry fit…

Corner no. 1..and..

Corner no. 2…left a bit too much of the black sharpie on the pins…looks like gaps. Need to drive this one together with a hammer.

So…to get the plywood back in place, I need to run rebates…..( always spell rabbets wrong….English style does not sound like a long eared furry thing..) best way to do that, ....

This was made by Stanley, and sold by Ward’s. A No. 78….that “bad” area ?

Cleaned up nicely, enough..

Then both of the sides …

Double check for depth…then the blank for the top.

All of these rebates are for the back of the case. Sides are sitting in dados…

had to set up the Stanley 45, with a #14 cutter. A backsaw and a sharp knife to help out.

Goal was to dado the wider of these two boards, then glue the “front” add-on after that..

Making the dados into stopped dados….while waiting on the glue to dry….dug out Poplar for the shelves..

And laid them with the 5.2mm thick plywood for the back panel..

Should be enough there…
Brought a case down to the shop….to locate where the shelves need to be…

Give a bit of space right above this case…and later, run the Stanley No. 39 3/8” Dado plane across, to make dados for the shelves to sit in…..

Door? Well, a check through the Ash supply…..not enough to build the frame for the door…..had to run out and buy a couple more ” sticks” of Ash….two planks came home…4/4×6 x 8’....total was 8bf….paid $10 total.

Maybe after Lunch settles, I can get a little bit more done?
Stay tuned…
