no previous part Part 1 of DVD Cabinet of Ash series Part 2: Flatten the curves »

began with an “Inventory”.....still had a 4/4×6 x 6’ plank of Ash. Also had quite a bit of scraps…

Got to digging around a bit more…

Bit of plywood…door panel, or back of the case?

And this piece of Poplar..shelves, maybe?
Have a bunch of box sets of DVDs I like to watch while at the computer….scattered out through drawers in the house. Would be nice if they were all rounded up, and place in a cabinet next to the computer’s desk. Then I can just reach over, and pick out a movie, or three.

I used one of the cases of the boxed sets, to lay out spacings for a couple shelves….right on the 1×6 plank…then hauled the plank to the shop. Plan was to cross cut it into a few parts…...can’t get to the tablesaw….a bit too long for the mitre box….so..mark out a line, a couple knife cuts to guide a saw…

Plank had bad ends, decided to remove them…

using a “cordless saw” 20” long, 8 ppi Panel saw. This is after a few other cross cuts…

Trying to split the lines, and hope things turn out square..

Found out IF I rub the old, plain candle along the saw’s plate, just above the tooth line, and use a decent grip..

And the entire length of the blade…..I also had my left thumb at the cut line, with the knuckle against the plate, to keep the saw “plumb” in the cut….about like a saw guide…soon had 2 sides cut…

2 scrap ends, and a shorter panel cut….

Hmm..might make this a raised panel for the door of the cabinet?....boards will need a bit of work, since they are still rough sawn…and a little “cuppy”....

8ppi does cut a bit rough, too. I also have a “top” and a “bottom” for the case…

Frame for the door will be from the rest of the scraps in the inventory….might even make a face frame around the front of the cabinet?
made a lot of real saw dust..

Next episode….getting these boards to S4S with the handplanes…should be another good workout?
Stay tuned….

I’ve reviewed all 8 of your posts so far. Nice work on this unit. It’s design is old school in that you’re not cutting any corners (something I’m famous for).
Just wondering… DVD’s? I’ve got a suitcase full of them from years ago in the attic. All this stuff is available online. You can also rip them into a $60 hard drive that takes up the space of a deck of cards.

Deck of cards? who has those any longer…..Apps….

Just kidding here. Good job…. ;-)

I happen to have a decent collection of movies and films that I like to watch….without doind any searching around…if I wanted to watch any of the Hobbit movies, tv shows from the 50s-60s ( remember Robin Hood? Sherlock Holmes?), Dr. Strange….I can now, when this is done, simply reach over, select a movie, slide it into the player on the computer, put on the headphones ( volumn @ “11”) and relax for a while.

There is a table beside the computer desk, that I can set this cabinet on,,,,within arm’s reach…
