« Part 1: Start up, and a clean up... Part 2 of Mitre Box, a rehab story series Part 3: New wheel, still soaking »

OK…Remove the extra deck…and tossed it away, took the mitre box outside to sit in the sunshine for a while

The Oringinal decking. Found a metal disc in the deck…Also got a better look at the stock rests…

These are also OEM items, they have, instead of a folded up end, just a small pin, that keeps the rests from being pulled out too far, and getting lost…

Now, about that metal disc in the deck….since this version of the mitre box does not use a rod & tree to set the length of repeat cuts…you would bring the stock rest and it’s clamp around front..

Clamp the stock rest to the deck at where ever you need for a length of cut….Other details..

Four Patent Dates, all from 1904. The other numbers mark how many cuts for a box, you set the swing arm at, say 4..that means there are 4 sides to the box, and the setting is 45 degrees….8 would be an octagon and so on…found one other scale, though..

Degree markings. there are detents underneath, to lock the swing arm in place

Swing arm moves in an arc….based on a King bolt..

More on that other “bolt” after bit. One of the reasons the box is outside..was to give it a soaking with PBblaster

As the swing arm was frozen in place with rust…hour of soaking in the hot sunshine…swingarm was swinging again..
Hauled the smelly thing to the shop…Started to take things apart, and clean them up with the grinder’s wire wheel

had an issue with that wheel, was shedding like a dog in summer….

Might be time for a new wheel? One wire even bounced around enough, that it went into my shoe,,,then into my heel! Had my son take a pair of pliers and pull it out! Decided to stop for the night, and buy a new wheel in the morning..and a thin Poplar board for a new deck….old one was a bit chewed up..

So..in the next exciting episode…we’ll put the new wheel to work…
Stay tuned

You definitely got your money’s worth out of that wire wheel!
