Been around for a while….need something with more drawer space, and a better "hutch"...Picked up a load of 1×6 Ash…

Instead of a 28" wide drawer…opted for two drawers about 14" or so…tried to make a cutting list….

Cleared most of the toys off the top of the bench..needed ROOM to work. Lot of the smaller tools were place in the "Tool Drawer"...

these needed to be cut for length ~ 31" or so…cut the first one…then used it to mark the others, cutting the bad ends off…wasn't precise, though…

they all match, now…..30-7/8" long….those short pieces? Are the rails….11 out of the 15 I need….had to bring another board to the shop..but first, there was a problem…

Seems not all were 3/4" thick….some were 4/4…reset the saw fence to 3/4"....and run them all through…some barely got sawn, others lost quite a bit….rails too. Extra rails?

bandit,

Looks like you've got a good start to another great project. Plenty of drawer space and lots of room for the 'puter monitor, etc.

feeling groovy..

needed a BUNCH of grooves milled….normally that would be a job for the Stanley 45…..except when boards are a tad narrow…36 grooves is a lot of work. Reset the rip fence and the blade height….1/4" or so between the fence and the blade….

Then reset the blade height…as the top and bottom rails need their tenons trimmed a bit..

Not bothering with doing a "haunched" tenon…when they will not be seen. Was all set to start mortising..even had the jig ready to set up..
Wood Hardwood Outdoor furniture Gas Outdoor bench

needs to be reset….last items were a little thicker, than 3/4"....some of the rails were a bit rough along the edges…
Wood Plane Machine tool Hardwood Rebate plane

We have ways.
The other reason no mortises were made….need to lay out WHERE they need to go….need a raised panel done, so I can use it to space the rails correctly So, last night, one panel was done…

So, now I can lay things out….and maybe decide on a profile for the desk's feet? One panel has been raised…

That will be next time i head to the shop. hope it cools down a bit. had to sweep the floor, again

Next exciting episode? Will be HOW these panels get "raised"...

late night, problem corrected..

Well, last night, after a long day of Garage sales and other errands…snuck down stairs to the shop. Decided to joint the rough edges of the rest of the blanks for the raised panels….
Wood Gas Hardwood Lumber Plank

One edge done, times 11….while doing the other edges, 2 blanks at a time…
Wood Hardwood Lumber Plank Wood stain

Noticed that some edges were not lined up, and some blanks were wider than the others…set up the rip fence, run the edges through….now, all 11 are the same width…all edges parallel…good to go, right?

Until I happened to lay panel #1 on top of the rest…
Wood Tool Gas Lumber Automotive tire

This may be a problem….ooops? About a saw kerf was taken off both long edges..
Wood Table Bench Outdoor furniture Hardwood

Almost there…ran a jointer….to get things better..
Wood Tool Hand tool Kitchen utensil Metal

Then had to re-do the rebates….reset the saw, fence and all…Stanley 45 to clean the "new" rebates up…
Test fit showed I now had two "fat" bevels…we have ways…
Wood Hardwood Gas Wood stain Machine

The #62 works to fine tuned things…IF the grain allows….otherwise, you get tear-out. wash finally able to do a dry fit of the "fixed" panel, and a couple rails…
Wood Table Composite material Lumber Building material

Made a mess on the shop floor, again…

Just imagine what raising 11 more panels would do….
Going to try to get a little done, today…..may just hide out in the shop, all day.

Ahh, I love the sight of late night mistakes 8^)
You can probably count the number of LJs on one hand that haven't seen this!

My most recent was walnut veneering a large number of panels then sawing them all 1" too short.

Nice save I must say and you have a nice, sharp plane out of the experience (but now is probably due for another tune-up!

raise a panel?

Many ways exist…and I tried a bunch of them….router tables…..table saws…hand planes…..then watched how paul Sellers did his…..thought I could also just use a old Stanley No. 4…...well, i changed a few details, along the way…
first, i cut a blank to size….and figure which face looked the best…
.
Wood Table Hardwood Tool Plank

Then mark a "stop line" about 1" in from the end..
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Wood stain Handwriting

I had also jointed the edges straight and smooth…they were a bit rough..
Automotive tire Wood Gas Tool Auto part

Ok, end grain gets done first….trying to leave about 1/2" that won't get a bevel…
Table Wood Rectangle Wood stain Floor

By going at a diagonal across the grain…I WAS going to use that old No.4
Wood Hardwood Metal Plant Auto part

Decided it was a tad too big…wound up using a #3 and the #11….lighter, easier to move around…
Blanks are wide enough that I can just use the end vise to hold them flat. After the ends were beveled, needed the edges done, too….used the top of the bench…
Wood Plane Hardwood Tool Bumper

Until there is a nice, crisp 45 degree corner….where the two bevels meet up. bevels done…but, panel will not fit in the 1/4" x 1/4" groove. As I wanted a flush, smooth inside to guide the drawers…I needed a rebate all the way around….
Wood Rectangle Gas Composite material Natural material

Wards 78? Nah,,, it was having "issues" with a dull spur…set up the tablesaw to make the spur cuts, and set up the Stanley 45 to clear away the waste…test fit a rail..
Wood Gas Composite material Rectangle Automotive tire

Ok..then do the other three rebates…the same way….then a dry fit…to see about the flush inside..
Wood Hardwood Gas Composite material Plank

With a couple rails…end rebates go into the grooves in the stiles…outside view?
Wood Hardwood Flooring Automotive exterior Plywood

And that is how I raise a panel. 1 done…
Wood Gas Hardwood Lumber Plank

11 more to do….stay tuned..

For those wondering about the size of these…they stand 31" tall….and a re 18-5/8" wide….

Rails are 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 16" Counting a 1/2" long tenon on each end. Grooves ar 1/4" x 1/4"

Stiles are 3/4" x 2" x 31". Grooves are 1/4" x 1/4", with the mortises going a further 1/4".

raised panels are 3/4" x 15-5/16" and are about 5" or so wide…( started out around 5-1/2" rough)

Still working out drawer runners….webframes? 5 of them, or just top and bottom, with 1×2 runners inbetween…

Depends on how the lumber supply holds out…
Top was to be 26" deep….looking more like 21-23"...

Single Brain Cell Sketch Up is working overtime…..stay tuned

About half of what I'll need…..made a trip to Lowes this morning….picked out the "best" 1×2 x6' (4 !) and a 1×4 x 4'....and hauled them to the shop…ready to cut down to all the webrames needed…
Which will be..later this afternoon…

"a 3 hour tour..?"

Between errands, and a trip to the Blue Borg ( Lowes) for some lumber…
Brown Cabinetry Furniture Drawer Chest of drawers

Needed 3 more 1×2 x 6' and that 1×4 x 4' The 1×4 is for later…needed to cut 9 more stiles…to go with the 5 I already had..
Wood Flooring Wood stain Hardwood Plank

Already had enough rails. Had to rip all the parts to width…as soon were a tad wider than others..
Wood Office ruler Wood stain Hardwood Rectangle

Ok, 10 stiles needed a 1/4" wide, by 1/2" deep groove milled….Was easier to do on the tablesaw…
Wood Rectangle Composite material Hardwood Flooring

Then, to attach the rails to the stiles, rails needed tenons…
Wood Outdoor furniture Hardwood Plank Lumber

20 tenons. Now, since each webframe is attached to the sides of the case with screws through the stiles..needed pilot holes in the stiles….easier now, than when things are assembled…so, a countersink was made, to allow a bit driver elbow room…
Motor vehicle Wood Automotive tire Automotive exterior Bumper

Not all my drills have cords, or batteries…then an electric drill, still set up from an earlier job, to drill a pilot hole..
Brown Wood Floor Flooring Wood stain

Then a chisel to clean things up. Then, some glue ( had to clean the bottle's tip out) a box of 5/8" nails, and a square….for a little assembly….glue on the tenons, 2 nails per joint…check with a square as I went..
Wood Gas Auto part Metal Automotive exterior

Some of them needed a clamp to pull parts tight…that gap thing…one done..
Wood Gas Composite material Rectangle Machine

stash it over on the tablesaw, out of the way, and build 4 more….

before all of this….I needed rebates made…reset the Stanley 45…to mill a rebate on the back edges of two side panels…
Peripheral Input device Wood Computer keyboard Office equipment

To allow the plywood back a place to sit.
Wood Motor vehicle City Engineering Building

One both sides were done, clamped them together, and stash them out of the way…
Wood Hardwood Gas Metal Plywood

Then I had room to work on the webframes.

need to go back to the shop, today, and add kickers to a few of the frames, to keep drawers from tipping down, when they are opened. Then, maybe a little assembly work?
3 hours of shop time, yesterday….wonder how many today?
Stay tuned…

A little assembly, another design change

Spent a little time in the shop….had kickers to get ready to install..
Wood Gas Composite material Engineering Lumber

Since the screws I had on hand were only 1" long, used a counter bore with a pilot hole. Then glue and screws..
Wood Rectangle Automotive exterior Gas Plank

Had also sanded the glue joints on the frames. kicker does not "guide" anything, merely keeps a drawer from tipping down, if you pull the drawer out a bit too far. I try to center them, and even check that they are straight with a square….but, location is by MK1 Eyeball.

4 frames get kickers, the bottom frame doesn't "need" one. So, frames are ready to install, now. Got the clamps off the case sides, and plopped one on the cleared off bench…
Wood Rectangle Hood Automotive tire Automotive exterior

Sanded things smooth…better to do now, than try later…Then the first frame was glued and screwed into place..
Wood Rectangle Outdoor furniture Wood stain Flooring

Then worked my way along…was getting a might crowded to be swinging a driver/drill around..
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Lumber Engineering

Ok, then set this aside, plop the other side on the bench…then the first on on top of it…
Wood Hardwood Lumber Composite material Engineering

Run a bead of glue along all 5 frames, rotate this mess over and into place,,,then align and screw things in place..a clamp helped align a couple spots….then stand this up..and add a few more clamps..
Wood Gas Engineering Machine Lumber

While I scrounged around for some plywood. One piece was wide enough, just wasn't quite long enough…found a second one I could trim the fill the gap…laid the case on it's front, glued and screw the back in place along one edge…used a clamp the pull things into square, and fasten the other edge in place….set it onto the floor..
Wood Tire Wood stain Plank Hardwood

To see how it will sit…now, if I just had a flat stretch of floor….seems one foot is a bit longer than the others…

Called face frames, or dividers….the pieces between the fronts of the drawers…milled enough to install..
Wood Outdoor bench Composite material Rectangle Gas

Wider ones for the top and bottom, 3 skinny ones for in the middle….in trying to get these all the same length and square on the ends…they wound up a blade's with too short…grrr, which I found out after trying to install the top one…using through dovetails on each end…changed that…made it into a 1/2 dovetail…and adjust the sides to match….the rest of the parts got re-trimmed down, to a tight fit between the stiles…and all were glued in place…
Wood Gas Hardwood Machine Metal

I later added a few more clamps across the fronts. Swept the floor..
Table Stool Wood Floor Flooring

Sawdust, shavings and scraps tossed…
Wood Tints and shades Metal Soil Carmine

And called it a day….
(Then, later, after Supper…snuck back to the shop…and milled enough parts for the 2 webframes for over the Kneewell…may try later today to get those made..)

Stay tuned….

Knee well unit build

I did get a stash of parts milled up..
Wood Flooring Hardwood Lumber Gas

2 front stiles, two rear stiles (one of Pine), 4 rails, and the pieces for the center divider….I also got an ugly 4/4×4 plank to the shop..
Wood Creative arts Hardwood Art Lumber

rough sawn, had a large knot. Needed this cut into a couple parts, 28" long, for now…
Wood Rectangle Hardwood Plank Composite material

They also need to be 2" wide…set the rip fence for 2-1/4" width…run both blanks through, reset the fence to 2", more of less…and run each through, with the freshly ripped edge against the fence..

Worst of these two will be the back of the knee well unit, between the webframes…the better looking one..will be two drawer fronts. These two had a problem, though….the same one these rails did..

They were all too thick…reset the tablesaw, again…and resaw to 3/4"...or whatever Borg pine is…

Next, stiles get grooves, as I want the T&G joint hidden…

And the rails got a tenon to match…but, it wasn't just the rails…
Wood Rectangle Composite material Hardwood Plank

This center "divider"/runner also needed tenons. The center piece is set back a bit, because the Ash block that goes between the drawers and the stiles…

Then, I needed 2 dados for that block….could have chop a notch in the pine for the block…I just notched the block instead….

That (now) pine center divider was center on the runner, glued and screwed in place, lined up with the block, two nails and a bit of glue for the rest of the joints, block was also glued down….then the back wall was added..

Just glue and c clamps, for now….let this sit a while…came back later, assembled the top frame, and glued it in place..

And center things up…no overhang in the back, 1-1/2" along the other three edges. Then screws and washers…

These were the easy ones….in was the ones in the drawer unit…

Not a whole lot of room in here. The "gap" in the back? Allows air to vent out, when you slam a drawer shut.
Had one spot, that kept snapping the heads of of screws…so, after the first 2 snapped off, a third was run in-between the first 2, using them as a threaded insert. Broken screws were already into the top…washered 3rd used the threads as the insert. Tightened right down.

Now, IF I can get this assembly off of the saw, and of to the side, again…..I can start building a few drawers.
Stay tuned…

Due to the way the router was run…straight down….means all the chips come straight back up….got a beard full…grrr. last time i did this, the chips went down…due to a long lost shield on the router…..

Build a drawer

Ok, most of the parts are ready? Well, the sides needed just a few more things done..
Cleaned the dados, so the backs fit all the way in…

Just happened to have the right width chisel, for that. Pilot holes for screws to attach the sides to the back..

Even the drill was "Vintage"....then flip the sides over, and do a countersink…

Why change bits, just change drill and all…there is a bevel to the bottom corner..

Makes inserting a drawer into it's opening a bit easier….

Spread some glue onto the tails, drive them home…insert the drawer bottom, and glue the back in place…clamps at the front of the drawer, 3 screws per side, to "clamp" the sides to the back….check for square…

And add 3 screws through the bottom into the back…after finding the center line…( hate when I miss..)

No glue. Then set aside while the glue dries…

next morning…clean up Aisle #1

Old No. 3 sized handplane, to smooth the drawer front…worked better than these other toys….

Although the sanders worked well, cleaning the glue joints on the sides…

So everything was smooth and flush…New handles….they use a single bolt…needed to find the exact center of the drawer's front…

Simple straightedge, do 2 diagonals, where the lines cross, is the center. NEW handles? Well, not exactly…

But since the shop also does Rehabs…

I think these will do nicely….better than those old black handles..

So….awaiting glue to dry on Drawer #2…

Stay tuned….

May also run the router around the top edges of the desk's top…as soon as I figure out which edge bit I want to use….small matter of dovetails for the 2 skinny drawers, too
We be getting there…stay tuned

Fit a drawer

Ok, stained the fronts of 2 drawers. and a test fit of the handles…

I slid it over here…drawers now fit…but. There was an issue with the raised panels intruding into the drawer's space..can't remove any of it, so..I planed the sides of the drawers down, until they fit…weapon of choice?

More drawers to do

Got the clamps off of Drawer #3 and #4, this morning while the shop was still cool…Had to clean the sides up a bit..

Someday, I get this figured out….grooves for the drawer bottom to set in…used the tablesaw..rough guess on the length of the backs ( came within 1/8" too long) and used the back to mark out for the plywood bottom to be cut..

Last drawer, top worked on, stain...

Ok, bought the last bit of plywood for the last drawer. Was looking to buy just a 2'x2' square of 1/4" plywood….looked at the stuff Lowes had….more like a pinup picture, not a flat one in the lot. looked at the 5mm Luann 2' x 4' panels,,,,dollar more, but at least it was flat….got it home..

Shame to use this for a drawer bottom? used the bottom right corner…will save the rest for something that shows..

Those corner brackets I use to attach the top to the desk….the washered screws were a bit too low, back of the drawer was hitting them….adjust the back corner being hit..to where it passes under the screw..handle went on after the stain was done…

Ok, since the round-over bit was "voted" to be the best option, installed that in the router…

Drawer was now sliding in, alright, just too dang far….simple, I added a screw to the back of the drawer, and adjusted that until the drawer sat perfectly in the opening….stained, drilled for a handle, installed the handle….had to wait until evening….

Shhhh, don't tell the boss…then we flipped the desk over, to place it top down on top of my tablesaw…THEN I could get the stain and brush out again….anything that will show, got a coat….

Almost ran out of the stain! i did not stain the plywood back, nor the foot rest…will paint both black, later.
needed a place to stash the drawers, before the Boss sees them on HER dryer…

Can't think of a better place. Plan right now, is to allow the smelly stain to dry, until it no longer stinks up the shop..then add a coat of clear gloss varnish…and see how that does….I'll leave the desk on the saw, until I need to varnish the top….then I can get things laid out for the Hutch that will go on top of the desk…

Stay tuned….

A PIP, and a Hutch start

Ok…PIP time for the main part of the desk….

From the front…

And the top….2 coats of Amber Shellac….needs buffed out a bit…

But wait, there's more….

This desk also gets a hutch of sorts…as a place to better stash the tower…

And maybe a whole lot more "stuff"

This is the old hutch…stuff piled up everywhere. Need to bring the tower down closer to the top of the desk…and raise the monitor up off the desk's top. Hauled the 1×8 x6' plank to the shop…will cut it down to a length that matches the top of the new desk….then do some measurements. Figure out how tall, how many uprights (3?) any shelves? have an external harddrive that needs a better spot to sit, than on a lamp's base.
BTW: that 1×8 also has a Live edge…..

Big question right now….can the tower lay on it's side? vents would go up. How much space around it is needed, for air flow? need to draw up a paper plan….then start making sawdust, again…have three 1×6 x 6' Ash planks available….

Stay tuned….second half is about to begin…

dado work...and some assembly

Ok, for some dumb reason, I skipped lunch today…hauled a few items to the shop…set up that router…was a bit too deep….wanted it closer to 3/8". Can't do these dado on the bench, needed a way to hold things just long enough for one dado, slide the board a bit, and do the next….so..

dado is narrower than the board using it. Also needed to know where each dado was, and where it stopped. Then find out where the edge of the router's base will go…easy. Had to keep a firm grip on the router, pressing it against the guide…so

I took a little time to square the ends of the dados…

And two needed a bunch milled…

Cubby hole shelves. Got all the dados made, whew. then started the tenons that will get glued into those dados..

everything was going good, up to this point….grrrr. Some reason the shelves were this short….trashed these, re-cut 4 new shelves, including two that needed flattened and thinned a bit. dry fit again….NOW they are 1/4" too long? Hmmmm, removed one tenoned end, and recut…try again…tenons were 1/16" too long…buzzed that off..third time a charm?

tenons on the uprights fit…rest of the parts fit…enough to try a dry fit clamp up….to see IF i have enough clamps…

Hmm, will have to do the glue-up in sections….late lunch, had to cool down a bit, anyway. Later this evening, snuck back to the shop for a bit. Milled a rebate along the back edges of two uprights. Found a piece of plywood that would fit for the back of the cubby hole. Glued the shelves to the uprights…

let this sit overnight ( was in Lowes this evening, and forgot the brass screws I need..) and, since I had a few "extra" clamps..

Glue and two clamps to glue the shelf in place…the other 3 are to pull this into square with the top of the hutch.
Pulled an inventory of my clamps….should be enough, now..to get this mess glued into a Hutch….maybe?

may need a couple extra hands when I glue things together…IF I work on Monday..otherwise it will be Tuesday.

we have a glue up

First, clamps came off everything ( and nothing fell apart…)I bought a package of brass screws…among other items

goal here was to add a couple screw into each glue joint. Drill a few pilot holes, countersink the holes a bit, wax the screws and drive them home, then sand each side….
Wood Wood stain Door Hardwood Gas

As I don't trust just glue for these joints. ( and I only snapped one screw head off..) Cubby Hole Assembly was then clamped in place…this is where that hammer came in…to "adjust" the fit a bit…..

Four clamps. Had the top clamped to the top of the tablesaw…with a Pine Pad…errand to run..came back and spun the top around, and re-clamp it to the tablesaw, without letting things fall onto the floor. Added a few screws to the other assembly, and sanded it down. Got to looking at the shelf for the monitor…show edge has two large knots…recut a few spots, and flipped the shelf over…the show a knot-free edge…more clamps and glue, and the hammer, again…
Wood Creative arts Art Gas Machine

So, somewhere in that forest of clamps, reside a Hutch. Letting this set a day, or so.

Some other items were bought with those brass screws…
Wood Hood Vehicle Automotive tire Font

brackets….."L" shaped ones for along the back of the hutch, one per upright….the fancy ones will go out in front.
IF those fancy brakets look familiar….
Wood Floor Flooring Wood stain Plank

i used another set to attach the parts of the desk together…so…these came with some black, round headed screws, or, I could use the brass ones?
Automotive tire Wood Bumper Automotive exterior Font

May just use the black ones. Need the brass ones for up on the top….for the four glue joints.
Then maybe a bit of sanding and stain? IF I have enough stain…
Stay tuned…we getting there….
