Start up, plans, and lumber
This is what I have now,,,
Been around for a while….need something with more drawer space, and a better "hutch"...Picked up a load of 1×6 Ash…
Then made a little sketch….
Figured I can make a hutch once the desk itself is made….Single Brain Cell Sketch Up then made a paper Plan..
Sides were laid out as frame & raised panel…need 3 sides made ( there have already been a few changes in those measurements, too) and a drawer unit that goes over where my knees go…
Instead of a 28" wide drawer…opted for two drawers about 14" or so…tried to make a cutting list….
Which quickly got changed….21" rails were slimmed down….to 3/4" x 1-1/2" x 16"....which also changed the raised panel sizes…then allowed for tenons (@ 1/2" on each end) for the rails….and 1/4" on the panels..) Work in Progress?
Cleared most of the toys off the top of the bench..needed ROOM to work. Lot of the smaller tools were place in the "Tool Drawer"...
Hmmm, may have to open a second Tool Drawer, before too much longer…Got 2 marking gauges cleaned up, and ready for work…if needed..
Then hauled the first load of lumber to the shop…
These will be ripped down to make the stiles, and most of the rails….needed to set up the saw, too
set up is 2"...to rip 6 stiles….
these needed to be cut for length ~ 31" or so…cut the first one…then used it to mark the others, cutting the bad ends off…wasn't precise, though…
So…made all the rails butt into a planing stop on the bench, and ganged them together…
tablesaw blade will not reach the full 2" in height…bandsaw to finish the cut…
they all match, now…..30-7/8" long….those short pieces? Are the rails….11 out of the 15 I need….had to bring another board to the shop..but first, there was a problem…
Seems not all were 3/4" thick….some were 4/4…reset the saw fence to 3/4"....and run them all through…some barely got sawn, others lost quite a bit….rails too. Extra rails?
Well, can't use this end…the other end was much better, good thing I could use the middle..
Thought I could get all 4 rails..nope, saw kerf made the last rail too narrow….wasn't going to trash a plank for ONE rail, when it will be where it can't be seen, anyway…..found a stick of clear Pine, and sized it to match the rest..
Well, that was 2 hours worth of shoptime, needed a Gatorade Break! was a busy start…
Floor was clean, before all of this started….
Stay tuned, spent a second 2 hour "shift" after the Break…
