« Part 7: Finishing touches....gates, screendoor... Part 8 of Porch Project series no next part

Once I hauled all the toys, and lumber around back. Even had a trip to the Blue Borg….needed:

a turnbuckle for the back gate

a sparkplug for the mower

a box of 3” screws
and..a pair of 2×4 x 8’ treated studs…straight as I could find in the stack.

raked away more dirt, leveled some rocks….got the old step the “H” out of my way…idea was to build a box, tap-con it to the slab…add the outside of the box….more room for drills with it off…was trying for level,,,then decided to match the “fall” of the slab…so water will run off to the end of the treads

Just a box…outside edges used a paver to hold up the outside corner blocking. Then, add the treads..

Box was made from a leftover 2×8 from the front porch project. Tread in front is a store-bought 4’ wide tread. added a filler between it and the slab. 2×8 was ripped down a smidge to fit…then start on box #2

had to dump 3 more bags of River Rock gravel, first, and spread it around, to make a base for the second box to rest on..

Box #2 is made with 2×6s….attached to Box #1 with screws…then add the front, adjust the pavers a bit so the tread will sit flat…then cut some 2×4 parts….

Angles are 20 degrees…used the speed square to mark the angle….part of the day’s trip to the borg was for 6 spindles ( only needed 5…and one spare)...did not bother to angle the tops of the spindles, predrill for screws is all..

Added a decking board as the cap rail…..turnbuckle leveled out the gate, too…

gate? gate? What gate? It is there, look for the thin black lines…Boss has approved of the new steps…

And that brings to an end of the Porch Projects….thanks for following along…
