« Part 6: Steps need a railing Part 7 of Porch Project series Part 8: Back porch gets new steps »

Ok…decided the old screen door had to many issues to fix…and make it look right….Boss picked out a fancier, all vinyl version….my job was to install it….old door headed up to the curb…

jamb on the latch side needed cleaned up..too many waves, and angles going on..had just the tools for the job..

Type 20 Stanley No.4c, from England…didn’t seem to mind the layers of paint…then the #78 leveled things out, back in the corners…yet never hit the old latch. test fits until things fit nicely..

Then step back and take a look..

Hinges are spring-loaded….doesn’t need a latch. Installed a pair of tread lights…

So you can see the bottom two steps. Had a decent day, worked on a gate, and got done an hour before the rains came, again…..set up a saw table…

Had a 2×4 to chop up…to build a frame..

Then, add 6 spindles, spaced to match the ones on the deck….then a test hang…

Hmm…sticky and saggy….sticky involves the planes, again..just the #4c…..saggy involves a turnbuckle…next test fit…

Much better…a look from the inside…closed..

Then unlatch, and let it swing open..

back porch needed a new railing and gate…to match the front of the house…had to clear away the old stuff…

Was going to try to save the 4×4..wasn’t worth the effort. Installed 2 new posts..

One post is attached to studs inside the wall, 6” Structural Screws, that I had to pre-drill the 4×4…the bracket for the other post is tap-conned to the slab…Then slowly add screws to attach the post to the bracket, checking for plumb…..

Next, grabbed the new railing..

held it in place, laid out for a few saw cuts….One section is fixed between the posts, the other swings on a pair of hinges( from the old gate)....

Slab has “fall” so rain water runs off, away from the house…A view from the outside?

Gate? Gate? What gate? Unlatch things, and let the gate swing open…

Railing is level, gate has a slight sag…will add a turnbuckle, tomorrow. Latch may get moved, or just done away with,,,and drill a hole..

Didn’t like that tall (4’!) middle post, gave it a trim, and a few bevels…

Took longer to get the tools set out, and put away, than the install of the railing/gate….tomorrow, IF the fine weather holds for a day…I’ll build the new step(s) to enter the back porch…

As what is there, just will not do. Have enough left-overs from the front porch job, can build a box to sit on a few blocks set into gravel….one joist will be tap-conned to the slab…old knees may need a second, lower step..

Stay tuned….
