« Part 5: Friday's Follies... Part 6 of Porch Project series Part 7: Finishing touches....gates, screendoor... »

Weather cleared off after lunch….lots of sunshine, and no rain…needed a coat, at first…soon had to get rid of it…

Hauled some of the usual suspects outside….and something else, this time, around…..a Mitersaw, with a stand…

Needed a way to make repeat angle cuts that all matched each other…brought out the smaller, cordless, model..

Stanley No. 2246A….Then, needed to find what angle I needed….brand new level, and a bevel gauge…

Lay the level on the treads, blade set for plumb against the post, body sits on the level to find the angle I need…

Angle came out to 19 degrees…so, 90 degrees – 19 degrees = 71 degrees on the saw’s scale….no notches to lock it there. 2×4 is a top rail,,clamped in place so I could keep the saw at the correct angle. Cut both ends. Install this to the side of the post. Then drag another paver out, set it where the post for the end of the railing will go….drag the 4×4 x 8’ post over to the rail, mark the cut needed. No way am I going to use the mitre box on it..circular saw made a pair of cuts. Post then is hauled over to the rail, and installed….then time to cut and install a few spindles..

held flush with the top of the rail. Same cuts as before. same spacing as the rest of the spindles…

Got all the spindles in place..trimmed the top of the top post to almost match the angle….and used a 5/4×6 deck board as a hand rail…

The remains of the 8’ 4×4 laying there? well, since it had one bevel on the end/top…Circular saw was set to 19 degrees, and three more bevels were done…

This is now a taller post, as house numbers will go on it…Blocking was already there, used a few 6” screws to attach the post, checking for plumb as I went…

Boss tried the new railing and steps…LOVED it, she also wanted solar deck rail lights installed…

have some un-opened hardware boxes to take back, pick up a set of new numbers, and a metal threshold strip…and this little project is just about …done! “Punch-list” time….clean up the front yard…and set about fixing the back porch step…..into 2 steps, away from an overhead gutter that drips onto the old step. Some of the un-used lumber will be heading back there…including the two stair treads I wasn’t able to use out front…

Honey-do lists..they just never end.

Stay tuned..thanks for following along on this little project.
