« Part 4: Dodging raindrops Part 5 of Porch Project series Part 6: Steps need a railing »

Once the rain moved out Friday…hauled the toys back out to the porch..

Still under cover of the little roof. Somehow got a bundle of spindle off the ground, and onto the sawhorses…had a scrap of 2×4 as a spacer…one screw at the top, one at the bottom….holding the top of the spindle even with the top of the top rail….got the front railing almost done..

Added a post for the stairs’ handrail…cut a 2×8 to length. Mitered one end for a “return”..

Then added the cut-off from the miter cut as a corner brace…screwed the 2×8 to the posts and the top rail..

10 minute, big drop shower came through…then back to work…2×6 was replaced with another 2×8 for the top of the south side railing…

And built the back railing. Bottom rail stops at the downspout. 6” Structural Wood Screws go through the rail, through the decking, and into the joist below. Added a 4×4 cutoff, for both the top rail, and the 2×8 cap rail..

drag another bundle of spindles to the back of the porch…and start at the outside corner..

And work towards the house..

What was left of Bundle #2 was used to start along the southside….Corner braces everywhere…makes for a wide corner, to sit planters on..

Details of the connection to the house. Took a break for a while…sun was actually out, clouds going away…son hauled the last two bundles up onto the deck…Decided not to waste this fine weather..back out we go,,,

Had to scrounge for one spindle, to avoid opening the last bundle ( gets messy when that happens) so..

Southside is done. Whew…another 6 hour day, spread out almost the entire day. Quitting time! Pulled the cork out of the bottle of J&B 12yr Scotch. and had a shot. Still need to do one handrail for the steps…will add a tall post at the south front corner, added a bit of blocking…

A place for the post to attach to, will be adding new, readable from the street house numbers to this taller post.

Busy day…”Busy, busy, busy…” and me knees are feeling it.

Stay tuned…almost done..
