« Part 1: the plan.. Part 2 of Porch Project series Part 3: day 3.... »

First task, besides a new computer monitor….was to add some blocking and short posts, and get the front two joists straighten out….

Got the middle joist straighter, then got the outside one straighter..by almost an inch….both were bowed in at the middle…Added a second set further down…joists are straight enough, now. First plank for the decking…was just cut to fit between the posts….didn’t feel like notching them…then added a few more planks…using a clamp to pull thing tight…

Not a bad start? kept right on going. I did have to notch around a post…some helpers showed up, and we got a bit further along..

Had finally reached the concrete porch! Was getting late, though…decided to at least get to the next post…helper doing the tap-cons into the planks up by the house, with the plank held tight. Had to notch for the threshold..Once one end was tap-conned down, I could screw the other end to the joists, while pushing the outside end into the last plank…then trim things off even with the outside of the joist.

6 hours of working bent over…back said “ENOUGH!” Knees wanted to go on strike…picked up the toys, and called it a day…the next day’s tasks ?

You can see the blocking I added earlier…need to notch around that post, add a couple “nailers around where the downspout goes through the deck. then MAYBE, cut three stringers, and build some steps…getting tired of hopping up and down off this deck….

Stay tuned…( 12 hours, so far….in two days)
