« Part 1: Starting up Part 2 of Chest of Pine Drawers series Part 3: Frames are done, 1/2 the dovetails, too »

Ok, time for some sit-down work..

Cut-resistant gloves…to keep me from getting cut, by these things

Set things up to chop a few mortises..

Why the backsaw? These mortises, being right on the ends, I use a little different way to chop them out..

I use the tenon that will go here, to lay things out…

Backsaw to make an angled cut….I also “pull” the toe of the saw back a few times from the back corners..

Then a chisel to dig a hole at the far end….turn the chisel around..

And pop the waste out. Pare the bottom of the mortise until a dry fit…fits..

Then mark to keep track of which part when where..

Why two marks?

Because it was the second one done for this frame….goet all four corners done, then some glue and clamps

And a pair of nails..

Piece of scrap iron, so IF the points of those 3/4” long nails should happen to come out the other side…they will get re-directed” back up into the wood. Got two frames done, and was starting on #3..

Noticed things were a bit…”off” Once #3 frame was done…I c clamped the first two together,,,trying to flatten out the “warp” going on…...SNAP!! One tenon had snapped off….NOT in the mood to make a new part….got out a few other toys….

Pilot hole drill, countersink drill, and a small screwdriver…hammer was a “In case of..”

3” long #6 screws…..one into each corner..needed candle wax on the threads.

I was going to go ahead and add screws to Frame #3…..was getting close to throwing things…so, I just hung the frame out of the way…..swept the floor, and closed the shop for the rest of Sunday…

Was out of the 3” screws, anyway…or so I thought…

Monday, I can go out and buy some more screws? ( Found the old box AFTER I did…) and maybe get the other frame done?
Stay tuned…about to get very messy in the shop….
