Veritas Skew Block Plane

Veritas Skew Block Plane

The Christmas present that keeps on shaving. My wife suprised me while making me decide what plane to get. A devious plan at the least, but she pulled it off. I helped a friend decide on this plane as the most versatile over the Lie Nielsen skew block plane. The major factor was the adjustable mouth. I opted for the 01 blade, usually suggested by hand tool gurus for low angle instruments. And now for the review… The fit and finish are far above any tool I have previously owned, th...

General Finishes Gel Stain, a good deal

General Finishes Gel Stain, a good deal

I bought some of this because I am refinishing a dresser ( saddly store bought). The dresser has been replaced by one I built. While it sat in my garage, it was noticed by a friend that wanted to relocate it to their home, but they wanted to have it refinished. So I sanded and sanded, then I dyed the unknown Malaysian wood to find out some sections did not take any dye at all, if I hadn’t sanded it myself, I would have thought there was excess glue in those places. So I put on a coa...

Easy Finisher

Easy Finisher

I have been wanting to purchase or at least use one of these for a while now. I went to the Woodcraft Octoberfest, they had a demo station for the whole set, and a discount. I tried them and decided this would work very well for the inside of the lamp shades I am making as Christmas presents this year. If it weren’t for that project I would never have been able to pull the trigger on such a pricey tool. I am impressed, even when I did have catches, there was no real damage done to t...

3/8 inch shell auger for making lamps

3/8 inch shell auger for making lamps

I bought this for my Christmas present projects for, it comes unhandeled, which is not a problem for a woodturner anyway. I did have to drill out my live center, but it worked, it works, and it works well. I made the handel from white oak, used the rust stain, and boiled linseed oil. I used a piece of copper pipe for the ferrule. The whole system works very nicely, I have found that 350 RPM works the best, also it works better if you are not using a spur drive, next time I will use a chuck...

GMC ROS, seems pretty goood from my limited experience

GMC ROS, seems pretty goood from my limited experience

This was on sale at rockler I think in November, Got it for $20 plus tax. I have had my fair share of problems with cheap power tools, but for $20 you probably cant go wrong as long as your expectations are realistic.I have never used a Random Orbit Sander before so my experience is limited, but it does a good job, it removes material quickly, and leaves a nice surface ( swirl free) It does bog down ( still oscillates, but doesn’t rotate) with too much pressure, but I suspect they all...

New No 93, rabbet, chisel plane

New No 93, rabbet, chisel plane

02-28-2010 04:33 PM by Andrew | 6 comments »

This is my first good plane, in fact it cost more than my 3 other planes all together. I needed a plane that could get into corners, and trim along edges. I wanted to get the 92 it had a 3/4” width as opposed to the 93 with a 1” width, but the 92 was on back order until mid april. My needs are my needs so here goes the 93. It took only a couple of minutes to flatten the back of the iron and hone the edge. The bottom seems pretty flat. After a couple minutes of set up and ad...

Trend Airsheild, My lungs thank you

Trend Airsheild, My lungs thank you

I have been on the fence about buying one of these for a year now. Christmas is on its way, and Andy has some work ahead of him to provide family and freinds with the gifts they deserve. There is a lot of wood dust that is going to be produced, and I don’t need to store it in my lungs this year. Anyway, this is a positive air preasure filtrating system. Means it constantly blows filtered air over your face so dirty wood dusty air does not enter. It works well. The battery will last...

Shop Made Honing Machine

Shop Made Honing Machine

11-01-2009 05:22 PM by Andrew | 7 comments »

I was communicating in a project from dbhost about this honing machine so I thought I would share it here. I got this motor (1/2 hp 1750rpm) from Metal Mike, a nieghbor, same guy who traded a working drll press for a broken band saw. I took 2 peices of MDF and glued them together, roughed a circle, about 10” diameter, then mounted it on my lathe. I turned it into a perfect circle, lathes are good at that. I then purchased a work arbor from woodcraft, I think $14. Mounted the MDF ci...

My new favorite toy.

My new favorite toy.

Hey Everyone, Just got My Jet 1642 EVS pro 1 1/2 hp. Awesome. I will tell you the set up was easy, 1/2 hour at most, needed an extra set of hands to balance the legs while attatching the Way to them. Thank You Dann. It was my own fault, if I had read the directions I would have noticed that they will balace on their own if you do not attatch the feet first. In otherwords, Put it together first then lift the whole thing up and install the feet. Everything goes together very nicely. Fit ...
