Hello! I am Dylan. I woodwork with potato powered tools in a very small shop despite having worked in all sorts of well-equipped shops. Through my drawings and website I hope to spread the knowledge and presence of hand tools.

How I got here:
I grew up around tools and construction equipment; for much of my youth, my dad afforded me a spot on the floor of his temporary carpentry shops to play with wood scraps. Despite this, the siren call of machine tools beckoned me to pursue welding and machining professionally in my mid-teens. I worked too hard in a machine shop one summer (2010) and found myself with mono followed by a difficult and permanent immune disorder. I tried to continue pursuing education (industrial engineer and aircraft maint.) and a handful of jobs (CNC lathe operator, equipment repair), but ultimately my body couldn't keep up with the physical demands.

The relatively low-dust and gentle pace of hand tool woodworking makes it surprisingly easy for me compared to most occupations. To this day, I still like to work sitting on the floor as I did growing up. Simple tools don't feel like a handicap to me; I am endlessly inspired to figure out ways to make complex tools out of simpler ones, to make useful items out of relatively inert materials.

A few years after starting a small sharpening service in 2015 to support myself, I resolved to make a living through illustration and other content focused around the work we do with our hands. Drawing has been a constant source of inspiration, happiness, and good health since high school. My ambition was stoked in ninth grade when my math teacher showed me some intricate prints he had manually drafted in college.

I hope you enjoy my work! Have a look at my website ( if you want to see more.
