Is this a Keen Kutter or a Keen Kutter blade, CB, and lever cap on a Sargent 409 base?No marks on the base other than “MADE IN USA” Thanks (On that sharp as ever thread, I have an example of the green squirrel tail and it says KUNZ on the blade.)

Plane Iron & Chisel Honing Guides - 65 replies

So what is everyone using these days? I read the thread from 2011 and just wondered if something has come along that is the new “latest and greatest”. I have seen the one wheel guide types and for some unknown reason, they don’t appeal to me. Also, I have a two wheel Stanley that the plastic angle setting guide broke off the...

Stanley #2 ? - 3 replies

I picked up a nice little plane yesterday, not without it’s issues, but a little cutie just the same. It’s dimensions are: 7 5/8” long, the body is 1 15/16” wide, and the plane iron is 1 5/8”. The lever cap is 1 9/16” wide. Rosewood knob (low knob) and tote, held on with brass nuts that have a waist. It h...

Dust Collection Question - 3 replies

I bought the harbor freight 2 hp dust collector. Vertical space where I want to put it is limited. My question is what exactly does the upper bag do? Is it just an air filter? Can it be made smaller or even removed? It’s going to be outside the shop but under cover. As further explanation it’s going in a carport but has to be ...

Preventing Rust - 19 replies

So after refreshing hand planes, what is the best step to take to keep them looking nice?I read a lot of old threads here but was hoping something something has come along.I like WD-40 as a rust remover but really haven’t had much luck with it as a preventive. Please don’t suggest unicorn fat, it’s just too expensive in my area.

Old Plane Repaired Every Way Possible - 8 replies

I did some woodwork for a neighbor and he asked me if I would like an old plane he found in his barn.I said sure and he gave me this superb piece of history, which is one of the coolest planes ever! In picture four, which is the front of the plane, I think I see a name or lettering of some sort.I thought more people th...

Keen Kutter or Frankenplane? - 11 replies

I picked this up thinking it was a Keen Kutter. The base has no Kx or KKx and the only marking on the base is “Made In USA”. The frog is red and looks like original paint. The frog has the number 609 on it. The adjusting nut is 1 1/4” and steel as are the tote and knob screws. Hardwood, stained a fakey color and varnished....

I Need A Suitable Joint Suggestion - 9 replies

I have been asked to make a box that will hold a fellow veterans cremation canister, a project that I am honored to do. But I don’t want to try and work above my skill level. I tried setting up a 90* lock miter bit on my table and felt that it was an accident waiting to happen, and I would rather not try to use that. I need a suggesti...

Bedrock 603C flea mkt. find - 7 replies

Hello,Yesterday being 80* we decided to hit the local flea market. I picked up the aforementioned plane for $5 and am trying to make sure it is all original. I have learned a lot about Stanley bench planes over the past few years but this is the first Bedrock I’ve come across. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is you have to take th...

Unidentified smoother with Sargent Blade - 8 replies

I got this plane in a deal for a Stanley No. 2. The body is 8 13/16” long, and the iron is 1 11/16” wide. It is faint but the Sargent trademark in the oval is partially visible. It is a prelateral and didn’t want to toss anything historically significant out especially if someone could use the parts. One cheek is broken bu...

Union Cleanup - 0 replies

I have had some luck the past few weeks at flea markets, and some surprises too. I found three at one place Saturday. A Consolidated Tool Company Pilot (which I thought was a Sargent) and two Unions which turned out to be one Union and a Ohio plane of some sort ( I think ). Here is the union. OK, not sure whats going on with ph...

Barn Fresh 1930's wavy logo Craftsman Knuckle cap - 2 replies

At some point this plane will be in the “before and after” thread. This plane (3732?) made by Sargent is built like a tank and is as sturdy as they come. No time for a resto right now but I did soak it in Evaporust and wiped it down as sort of a holding action…..I can’t stand to look at these old boys long wh...

A Good Block Plane, But What Is It? - 3 replies

Obtained a good block plane today and am not 100% sure what it is. It’s an Excelsior base with adjustable mouth and I can’t get anything off the blade. The heel of the lever cap is not dimpled, I didn’t get a picture of the topside of it. The lateral says Stanley on the tail end and has the 4 dates ….Is this an early 9...
