« Part 1: The first post of a project 2 years in the making Part 2 of Entertainment Center and accompanying bookcases series no next part

I am debating having a side panel similar to this. I have both plywood and hardwood that would do I think. But I want to write out my thoughts and perhaps someone will throw rocks and help me?

1. Do I need to worry about joining the hardwood boards that make up the panel with dowels or tongue and groove, or is that overkill?

2. Is the only gain for hardwood based on the visual appeal of the hardwood available over the available plywood? If so, maybe I will just get something better?

3. If I do hardwood, I am tempted to add some angled relief to my panel. This temptation exhausts me.

4. To rabbet the panel into the stile groove, or not to rabbet? This changes the thickness of the panel.

5. I don’t think the plywood will noticeably affect the stability since this project is mostly mortise and tenon. It will affect the ‘solid’ feel but I don’t think this will matter because of the project already having a ton of mass.
