What's the point of a hollow vessel? - 9 replies

Have a bit of an anti-establishment question. I love turning and am trying my hand now on a hollow vessel. Until now I have hollowed out some relatively deep and tall goblets (my deepest is 4.5 inches) and clearly for a cup, one needs to make space. Have rarely needed to use a bent tool. Now, I understand why one would hollow out a vase.E...

What's wrong with my first finial? - 9 replies

Been turning for about a year now, and tried my first finials on a couple of small thin boxes meant for holding spice. (about 1.5 inch wide, each) Overall the effect looks weird. Something in the design is off. I am thinking if just cutting them off…Advice?

Don't understand this caliper - 6 replies

I got this inside-outside caliper, and it seems to me that when the outside is closed the inside should be at zero too. But here the “inside” side is not at zero. This is “vintage” but it’s not bent or anything. Am I missing something on how this is used? I though it’s suposed to be the same distance on each s...

How best to prepare these avocado pieces? - 6 replies

I know this is a common topic, but even after reading a lot and watching vids, still not sure what to do. First time I ever got tree wood, from an avocado grove that an acquaintance has, and that underwent serious pruning. Most of the wood was garbage (at least to my beginner turner eyes), but I found some nice pieces. I already coated the...

English bedan, can be used bevel up? - 5 replies

Hey all, Still a pretty newbie to turning, but I recently got a bedan, after it was highly recommended by a very experienced turner. Turns out (pun intended), he once worked for Crown, developing tools, so he sold me a Crown, which I now know to be an English bedan, trapezoidal profile. And when he demoed it for me, he indeed used it bevel down...

What different grinds on these two similar gouges? - 12 replies

Hi all,New to turning, I recently completed a 20-hour course. After reading here a lot, I got a set of BB, which included a 3/8 inch bowl gouge, and to make myself feel better (i.e. I was not spending enough), I also splurged on a 1/4 inch Henry Taylor bowl gouge, thinking to use it as a block plane to the 3/8 smoothing plane (got the analogy...

Got an extra thicker flange with new hybrid saw - why? - 12 replies

I recently upgraded from a Bosch contractor saw to a Harvey (the maker of the USA brand Grizzly, I am not from USA) hybrid. (I am pretty sure it’s the same as the new G0833P). Anyway, it came with an extra flange (on left), thicker than the one already on the arbor (on right). Not sure when I am supposed to use it and for what. Any help...
