Identifying Wood - 3 replies

I’m getting ready for my next project. This piece of wood was not identified when I bought it. It looks like walnut to me but I don’t have the experience to make a solid judgement. Again, I coated half of it with mineral oil to bring out the grain.

I have watched some YouTube videos on this and have a fair understanding of what to do, but have one question. How much gap should there be between the slats and the frame of the desktop? I want it free enough to move but don’t want it to...
