« Part 3: More Shaping and More Joinery Part 4 of Stickley Coat Rack series no next part

I finally finished up the Stickley style coat rack last week. Long time since the last entry, but tough to get some decent finishing weather in the heat of summer!

Here’s a quick video of the final planing and finish:

The first step was hitting everything one final time with a smoothing plane to get it all ready for finish.

I’m trying to match some older cherry pieces in the room, so the finish is going to start with a stain.

In this case I’m starting with a black cherry stain and I ended up putting on two coats to get it dark enough. I wasn’t particularly happy with the purple-ish tint, so to warm it up a little bit I used amber shellac for the top coat.

This actually warmed it up very nicely and evened out some of the blotchiness.

On to glue-up, which went rather well for a change.

Final step was to add some hooks. I added 4 total, one on each side, with two of them placed a little lower so my daughter can hang up her own coats – at least that’s the theory!

Overall I like how everything came out. The look of the base is really eye catching, so thanks Stickley for that design!

Thanks for taking a look!
