no previous part Part 1 of Two drawer chest series no next part

So right now my catch-all storage is a cardboard box that fills up with shavings and sawdust. I decided to make a little chest with two drawers to store odds and ends. The drawer is 12×12 by 18 inches deep. The bottom drawer will be about 2/3 the height and the top drawer 1/3. It would be good practice for cutting dovetails and fitting drawers. This is also my first time making a frame and panel, which will be the back of it.

I didn’t do a great job of flattening and squaring the panels for the carcass. This gave me trouble all the way through laying out and cutting joints. For next time, I’ll definitely take enough time to get panels prepped well. It’s about 1/32 out of square, which I will call good enough for a shop project. Also, I used too many dovetails for the bottom joints (I think 12 in 18 inches). I spaced the top dovetails out with dividers and only used 8 or 9 on the top. I think they look better and they definitely were faster. All four joints went together with barely any fine tuning, so I feel like I’m getting pretty consistent with cutting to my lines. I ended up with some gaps where I didn’t get all the bow out of the panels, but the case feels indestructible.

I’m really happy with how the frame and panel came out. I took more time prepping stock, and it made the rest of it go really well. I cut the tenons really close to their final thickness and used a router plane to get them square to the face. When I chopped the mortises I stood a square up on the bench as a reference. The frame came together with almost zero twist and only took a little planing to clean up.

I’m gluing up the frame and panel right now. Once I fit it to the back, I just need to make a pair of drawers and this will be done.

And the drawer faces are prepped. The top one is out of square by 1/64th, but that will get sorted once I fit the drawers.
