Distributing Lumber

I have been milling redwood in Norther California for a while now. I have a large amount of stock but very few outlets for the lumber. I am wondering if anybody has experienced this before. If so, what type of cut did you find the most desirable and who did you distribute the wood to?

Currently I sell to a fencing company and that has been a very good outlet. The only problem is that they insist on ConHeart clear lumber. I have usually some knots and sometimes sapwood but the wood is beautiful and very good for siding and fencing.

Thank You For Your Time,

Will S.

Have you considered online classifieds?
- In Arizona we have several urban sawyers that post ads on Craigslist.
Not uncommon to see ads for entire units of commercial grade lumber too.

- WoodWeb has classified section for buying/selling Lumber

IMHO Beautiful figured wood sells to a niche market consisting of; designers, furniture builders, and hobbyist. Figured softwood has much different demand than hardwood, so potential market is even tougher to find. Doesn't help that when you say redwood most folks think rustic outdoor bench, or chainsaw carving; thanks TV show Redwood Kings.
If you don't have a website for selling the specialty figured wood, folks will never see it, nor ever buy it.
So make a decent website, keep it updated with latest pictures, and try reaching out to niche customers?

Thanks for reading my thoughts.
Cheers!
