Round without a Lathe - 5 replies

I need some ideas and you guys never let me down. I am about to attempt to make my own wooden vise screws. I have a thread box and taps on order but I am not sure how to go about making the dowel for the thread shaft, head, and handle considering I do not own a vise. I could buy a dowel but I would prefer to try to make it myself. Any ideas?

Indoor humidity - 9 replies

I do a lot of my handtool work indoors in one of our spare rooms. I have recently purchased a temperature and humidity gauge and the humidity has been running between 45-60% even with the A/C on. What humidity do you guys in the midwest have indoors? This would explain why I am constantly battling rust on my planes even when they are waxed. I do...

Taking the Plunge - 3 replies

Well this weekend I took the plunge and made a considerable investment toward woodworking. I bought about $1800 worth of planes, chisels, blades, etc. from Lie-Nielsen. I am also in the middle of building a big heavy bench out of southern yellow pine ala Chris Schwarz. On top of that, I have cleared out a room inside my house for the bench an...

Black Palm Finishing - 3 replies

I just picked up a small piece of black palm that I think I am going to try to use for some decorative inlay. Does anyone have any experience finishing it (or any other palm)? It feels like it may be a bit waxy but I am not sure. I found some information about the “wood” when I googled it but I am having trouble finding any info...

Cross Grain Veneer/Inlay - 4 replies

I have a few general questions for the Jocks about veneering and inlaying. I have begun making an end table and I was thinking about putting some inlay about an inch or so in from the outside edges of the top around all 4 sides. I am concerned that when running the strips across the grain that the inlays may crack/split. Is this something I...

Fingerprint Rust - 8 replies

I am apparently cursed with extremely acidic sweat! I have been fighting rust problems due to fingerprints left on my plane (and to a lesser degree chisel.) I can start off the day with zero rust and literally by the afternoon I can see a fine film of rust beginning to build on the tool. Here is what I do immediately after finishing up my wor...

Relieving Corners w/ Hand Tools - 8 replies

Newbie Question: I have started really getting into working with hand tools – especially the part of working in silence without a dust mask. I am looking for ways to relieve/break sharp wooden corners by hand. (Not sandpaper!) One method I know if is to run a block plane down the corner at a 45 degree angle, but personally I do not l...

Bandsaw Blade "Hump" - 3 replies

I recently purchased a new Timberwolf 1/2” blade for my 14” bandsaw. While installing the blade and adjusting the guides to this new blade, I noticed that every time the back edge of the blade near the brazing would rotate past the rear bearing the blade would rub rather hard against the back bearing. I needed to use the blade so I...

Walnut and Cherry - 4 replies

Here is something I have been curious about for awhile. Fresh cut, walnut and cherry look great together in my opinion – but does anyone have an example of what they look like together after a few years when the cherry has completely darkened?

Newbie Hand Cut Dovetails - 9 replies

I have a few newbie questions I was hoping some of you may be able to help me out with. First some background. I am currently working on a project where it is the first time that I have tried any type of hand cut joint – and I chose box joints. So far things are going well but very slow as I am taking my time to get tight fitting join...

Router Plane - 2 replies

I just purchased a small router plane and I was wondering if anyone knows of a slick way to sharpen the L-shaped cutter. I do not do well at sharpening “free hand” so I am hoping to come up with some type of jig to help get repeatable sharpening results. Also if anyone has any tips for using it, that would also be appreciated. I...

Stinking Finishes? - 10 replies

Due to winter, I am now stuck unable to apply finish to a project…I don’t want to smell danish oil and varnish for weeks inside my house! I was wondering, how bad does shellac smell? I assume the alcohol smell goes away rather quickly, but what about the shellac itself? Any other suggestions for a stinkless/non-toxic finish?

Doweled Tenons? - 3 replies

All, From time to time I have found furniture designs that include dowels being passed through a tenon. I have also found plenty of information out there that states a well fitting, glued tenon will fail in the wood long before the glue would give way. Being a newbie I thought I would send the question out to you folks…does putting a ...

Handtool Storage - 11 replies

I have decided to give up on “budget” tools and instead focus on buying tools that I will be happy with throughout my woodworking lifetime – even if it means waiting. That being said, I have recently purchased a Lie-Nielsen bevel-up jack plane and a couple of Lie-Nielsen chisels (I was able to try them out prior to buying and ...

What is "perfect"? - 17 replies

I am a person that likes to reflect on the complexity and different points of view to life…so I thought I would pose a few questions to my fellow woodworkers. It seems that a lot of woodworkers are in a constant pursuit of “perfection.” However, given that we are human and do make errors, what do you consider “perfect...

Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event - Indy - 2 replies

FYI to anyone within driving distance of Indianapolis. Lie-Nielsen is putting on a hand tool event at the Herron School of Art. Admission is free. Check Christopher Schwarz blog and the Lie-Nielsen website for more details. I plan on going up Saturday. Hand tool use and sharpening demos during the day for free. I can’t wait!!

Bevel Up vs Bevel Down - 4 replies

I am sure this may spark a heated debate, but I need some feedback… I am new to wood working and struggling to learn how to correctly tune, sharpen, and use a hand plane. I just read a very interesting article in popular woodworking regarding low-angle bevel up bench planes. To summarize the article it basically states that low-angle ...

Ambrosia Cherry? - 8 replies

I was in Parkersburg, WV this weekend and stopped by the local Woodcraft. They had Ambrosia Cherry for $3.30/bf. I am extremely new to woodworking and thought this seemed to be a very good deal; however, I wanted to get everyone else’s opinion for a couple of reasons. 1) I see ambrosia Maple all the time and from time to time ambrosia...

Is there a way to estimate moisture content of wood without a meter?

Shadowed Inlay - 5 replies

I have run across a project or two in books and online where complex inlays on a piece of furniture have “shadowed” edges. I believe this is accomplished by lightly burning the edges of the inlay pieces. My question to you is what is this technique called? And also can anyone recommend some places that a person can learn about this?
