upcut or downcut spiral bit for mortises? - 10 replies The title pretty much asks it all, but let me add that I will be using my new Freud 3 1/4 hp plunge router, at only $120 ($100 off, no edge guide). If interested, see this LINK Anyway, the post is not about the router, but it’s a good deal that some of you might be interested in.I have heard that an upcut bit will clear chips better, bu... |

setting hand plane depth - 23 replies I am still trying to learn the proper use and set up of hand planes and I am having some trouble. I am attempting to use the method of setting the plane on paper shims (not under the throat of course) to set the depth, but once I tighten down the cap iron (cam action) it greatly increases the blade depth and raises the plane up. The wheel is about 1 1/2” wide on the grinding edge, and it spins at 170rpm according to the specs. The included wheel is 150 grit, and there is a water tank of sorts to keep it cool. It is reversable and has two adjustable to... |

"Footprint" planes - 14 replies These are rather low-cost planes that you can buy at Sears, but I wanted to find out what some of you think of the brand’s quality. I cannot afford $100 for each plane, and truthfully not even $50 each. One set that looks like a good setup for me is this set of 3 for $90, which includes a block plane, a smooth plane, and a jack plane. A... |
