Tube style cigar humidors - 4 replies

A co-worker and friend is retiring in a few months and is a big cigar aficionado. He is also a big fly fisherman and always has a few with him when we are fishing. I know nothing about cigars or how to properly store them, but I thought i’d make him a small tube style humidor for fishing trips. Does anyone have experience with either the Wood...

Pen turners- do you use/like Sapele? - 18 replies

I have a bunch of Sapele scraps left over from a recent chair project. They are mostly useless to me but could be resawn into pen blanks easily enough. Do pen turners like Sapele? If so what size blanks are the most useful?

‘Solid oak’ doors - 1 reply

I’m renovating my master bathroom. As part of the renovation, I’m replacing two entry doors. To match the doors in the house, I went to my local lumber store and ordered two pre-hung, solid oak doors. I was a little surprised by what is considered a solid oak door these days. So yes, technically this is an oak (veneer) door, and yes, it ...

A real head scratcher - 7 replies

As I was walking the plant site today at work I came across a stack of old pallets. One of the pallets had this ‘board’ attached. For the life of me I cannot imagine why anyone would go to all the trouble to slice plywood into thin strips, turn them on edge, glue up the stack then veneer it to look like a solid board….for a pallet! ...

Framing Oil on Canvas Paintings - 1 reply

Looking for opinions on the PM 1500 bandsaw..... - 11 replies

....from LJ’s that own one and have some time on the machine. I’m looking to upgrade my BS. I used a PM 1500 last week and it seemed like a decent machine. Not too big but has good HP and decent resew capacity. Looking for opinions from anyone that has used and lived with one for a while since the reviews seem mixed at best.

Need Help- Target Coatings with Cross-Linker - 13 replies

Today I made up some samples using Target Coatings EM6000, EM8000 and EM9300. I have sprayed lots of NC lacquer over the years, but this was my first attempt at shooting with water based products. I ran into an issue that I’m hoping one of the more experienced users of Target products can help me with. My EM8000 and EM9300 samples ca...

Powermatic Model 24 Shaper- Anyone have Experience? - 13 replies

I have an opportunity to purchase a Powermatic model 24 shaper that appears to be in excellent condition. This would be a replacement for my current Craftsman 1/2” spindle shaper which I have hated from day 1- the open top design is not my favorite. The PM24 is one of the smaller shapers- 1/2” & 3/4” interchangable spin...

What are they using as an adhesive in Baltic Birch ply? - 2 replies

What ever they are using to bond Baltic Birch plywood together is tougher than carbide! Last year I made a mortising fixture from BB. I ran one edge through the jointer a few times to true it up. I was surprised to see that the brand new set of HSS knives I put in had a deep ridge at every glue line. Two weeks ago I upgraded to a helical head ...

The resurgence in fine furniture- truth or myth? - 2 replies

A few weeks ago I was reading an article, I don’t recall where or what the topic even was. The one sentence that stood out for me was (to paraphrase) “with the recent resurgence in interest in fine furniture….” So I’m curious to know from those LJ’s that currently work in the trade- are you seeing a resurg...

Domino DF500 or Multi-Router? - 25 replies

My next few projects are going to require a lot of angled, mortised joinery. Too much to cut by hand. I’m contemplating either the JDS multi-router or a Domino DF 500. Neither is inexpensive, so I’m looking for some opinions from those that have used either (or both). What are the pros and cons? Thanks!
