Glue and finish choice for veneer bookmarks - 9 replies

I’m looking to make bookmarks similar to these using scrap pieces of veneer from a local veneer shop. The instructions say to use wood glue or double-sided tape to adhere the pieces together. I’m not sure what the best route is here – I don’t want the glue to bleed through the thin veneers and don’t expect to be ...

Material choice for outdoor sign - 10 replies

What material would be most appropriate for an outdoor painted sign measuring approximately 3.5’ tall and 4.5’ wide? I’m open to either sheet goods or a panel glue up. Would like it to hold up as long as possible without needing to refinish. I am planning to prime the panel with a good exterior primer, and I assume my wife w...

Miter slots - 10 replies

Some table saws have T-style miter slots and others have flat miter slots (please pardon me if I’m not using the correct terms here!). What are the advantages of one of the other? I would imagine that T slots make it more difficult to use after-market accessories.

Metal can pump - 10 replies

I’m trying to find pumps for the metal cans that BLO, mineral spirits, etc. are sold in. I’ve done some Google searching but am apparently not using the right terms. Can someone help me know what to search for? Ideally I’d like to find a pump that fits the 1qt size bottle:

Craftsman 113 tilt issue - 4 replies

Hi guys, I’m about a week into owning my Craftsman 113.298762 table saw. I noticed that both the blade height and tilt wheels were difficult to turn, so today I’ve been working on cleaning up the worm screws. I cleaned with an old toothbrush and mineral spirits and then gave both screws a wiping of Johnson’s Paste Wax. While...

Raising the grain - cutting board - 12 replies

I’m working on finishing my very first cutting board, made of walnut, maple, and purple heart. I intend to finish it with mineral oil. At my disposal I have a ROS with 220 grit H&L sandpaper, a 320 grit sanding sponge, and both 400 and 1000 grit in wet/dry sandpaper to use on a block. At this point I have sanding with 220, then w...

Shop on a Hypothetical Budget - 53 replies

I’m new here; please accept my apologies if this has been asked before. If you were given an empty 2-car garage with a budget of $2,500 to build a shop from scratch, what tools/brands/models would you buy? What would you do differently if your budget was say $5,000 or even $10,000? Realistically, I intend to start with a table saw...

Used table saw pricing - 15 replies

I’ve been watching Craigslist carefully for table saws in my area. I’m trying to get a good feel for price points and brand names so that I can more easily determine if I’m getting a good deal. Delta Unisaws seem to be pretty well respected. This one (https://louisville.craigslist.org/tls/6452306708.html) appears to be in go...

Used RBI Hawk vs. New Dewalt DW788 - 22 replies

I’m brand spanking new at all things woodworking. Just starting to get my bearings. I am interested in purchasing my first scroll saw. I would like to purchase a machine under $500, but with excellent quality that will last me a very long time. I don’t want to buy the least expensive machine and then wish I had more later. If ...
