The Joinery Gallery-An Introduction

The idea of successfully joining two or more pieces of wood together is one of the most ancient trades known to mankind. Over the last few Millennia this concept has evolved along with options, the proper tools, and the techniques required to accurately produce a sound joint. My style of woodworking is about joinery. I have always been amazed at how delicate yet strong the result of practiced craftsmanship has developed pieces that have last hundreds of year. Today there is somewhat of a hand tool renisessance emerging. My personal hopes is that this movement in this ancient craft will produce work that will last even longer than what we relish today. There is a balance of power by machine vs. powered by hand. I personally enjoy the quiet time spent at my workbench cutting and shaping accurate joints by hand, but do not limit myself as a purist of either approach. The lesson here for me is that hand tools have survived for thousands of years, not to be replaced by power tools, but rather to be enhanced by them. A maker can expend all of his or her energy in preparing a roughly sawn plank fresh from the mill with hand tools but why? Machines can get this task completed much faster and with greater accuracy so one can then focus on the true aspect of the work, the joinery.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.

God Bless
