Weaver Shapers? - 2 replies

I see Weaver shapers pop up on auctions every once in a while. I can’t find a whole lot of information on them, despite the fact that they are still in operation and apparently have been operating since the 1920s. What first caught my attention about these machines is that they look like beefy shop-built router tables rather than actual sh...

Joint/Planer Combo Robland vs Jet - 8 replies

Hey folks, been quite a while since I posted here, but I find myself in need of some wider expertise. I recently moved accross the country and offloaded much of my heavy machines before doing so. I now need to reacquire a planer and jointer and I’m considering a combo machine. I found a 12” Jet and Robland on classifieds and I’...

Well... That's not walnut - 13 replies

I picked up a few logs that were on the side of a hiking trail. Judging by the piles of sawdust next to them, they had pretty recently been cut by the forest service. The grain had a deep brown color that was obviously walnut. Then I went to mill it and my chainsaw was spitting out vibrant yellow chips. Anyone know what this is? Photo doesn&#...

8" Jointer fence - 18 replies

I’ve got an older Rockwell 8” jointer (37-315) that was in storage for a long time. When it was pulled out of storage, the fence took a hit and the left half is now missing. I don’t want to point fingers or anything, but it was definitely Steve’s fault (OP curses Steve’s name under his breath). So now I’m on t...

Wood Gloat - 10 replies

This post probably doesn’t add a lot of value to the site, but my wife doesn’t appreciate how awesome this is so I’m gloating to you guys instead. I have a coworker that had a smallish (12-13”) cherry tree down on his property and he asked if I wanted it since I was into woodworking. I jumped on it and managed to cut t...

Advice on Glue ups for irregular designs - 5 replies

My sister asked me to make her a serving tray and together we came up with a cool design for the base. I had to glue the herringbone pattern onto a plywood base to make the glueup possible. But then when my wife saw the pattern, she loved it and asked me to make her a cutting board with the same design. Now I am struggling to figure out h...

I may have impulse-bought a lathe - 45 replies

i was watching an online auction tonight because there was a scroll saw and a few other items in which I was interested. I also noticed that there was a Rockwell lathe up for auction, so I put it on my watch list and threw out a lowball bid of $115. With 7 minutes left to go, someone finally outbid me… but by that time I had become enamore...

Cracked Motor Housing - 12 replies

I’ve been looking for a bandsaw for quite a while and I found a Rikon 10-325 (14” Deluxe) on one of the auction sites that I stalk. It is still in the box, but has a note that says the motor housing is cracked, so I assume it was a store return or something similar. I’m a mechanical guy and my knowledge of electrical motors ...

modular router bits? - 6 replies

I recently bought a whole bunch of stuff (major score) from a super-nice guy that was selling off all of his dad’s old woodworking stuff. When we were almost done he tossed in an old military ammo can just because I had been checking it out. It was full of random bits of sharpened metal. The guy said his dad used to create his own route...

Tannewitz XJ at auction in Grand Rapids Michigan - 1 reply

Just posting this up in case anyone is looking for a massive piece of old iron near Michigan (I’m not affiliated with the auction at all). This Tannewitz is up for auction today and it looks to be in great condition with some pretty nice extras (both miter gauges, two beismeyer fences, electronic blade brake). I’m sure the price w...

Use for large cable spools? - 9 replies

These are posted up on my local classifieds for free. The guy lists them as coming in two sizes 84”x48” and 72”x46”. I can’t help but think about how much free wood that is… but I also can’t really come up with what I would do with them (aside from flipping them on their sides and calling it a giant ...

Why are shop carts so valuable? - 8 replies

I’ve never done any woodworking in a production setting. I’ve only ever played around in hobby shops and custom shops, so this question might just be from a lack of production experience. Regardless, I am wondering why old, beat up wooden shop carts sell for such a premium. I was at an auction recently and saw about 50 of these carts...

Unknown Over-arm router - 4 replies

I’m going to buy a DC unit from a guy this weekend. He is selling of his dad’s old woodworking shop, so I’m going to poke around while I’m there. One of the things he has mentioned is a Champ Fond over arm router. The only info I can find on this thing is from an online auction where one was sold back in September (if thi...

PM72 (another TS advice thread) - 12 replies

I am selling my chainsaw (Husq 394xp) and the accompanying milling attachment in order to get some money for a new table saw or planer (I currently have crappy versions of both). One guy has contacted me with an offer to trade for a PM72 that is reportedly in great condition if I am willing to also throw in $200, which seems like a fair price if...

Used Delta 22-580 - 6 replies

I’m looking at buying a Delta 22-580 planer from a classified ad. The owner says that it needs a new bearing, and he is asking $65 for it. To me, a decent planer at $65 is something to leap at. However, I’ve never tried to replace a bearing on a newer benchtop planer. Has anyone done it with this model (or similar)?
