What do you get when you combine an old Kirby vacuum a hot tub filter some scrap plywood and a peanut butter jar? My new dust collector! I built a dual chamber box mounted to the vacuum body. Each joint I used construction adhesive on to prevent vacuum leak inefficiencies. The vacuum draws in air through the house ejecting it into one side of my chambered box. It then has a hole which I’ve mounted a peanut butter jar into that forces the air to go through the jar. I wrapped a large spring in course cloth to slow the air allowing the dust to drop out in the jar and pre filters the dust. The air then passes up through the second chamber and out through the filter which was just an old hot tub filter I had laying around. I installed a door on my scroll saw cabinet where the vacuum is located and this allows me to further isolate the dust away from my lungs. The peanut butter jar is small but I produce such small amounts of fine dust on the scroll saw that I think it will suffice. The suction is actually very impressive. I routed the hose to the top of the stand for now but plan on building some kind of dust collection shrouds that will go under the scroll saw table.
