I lucked out at an auction again with this horizontal sponge sander. The drums are made of a sponge wrapped in a cloth sock so as you are sanding a curved piece it will conform to the curves. I was fortunate enough to get what amounts to a lifetime supply of sandpaper and replacement socks for the two sizes of drums. Needles to say I have an excuse to set up grandpa’s old lathe and do some turning. The base of this machine is filled with lead and it weighs 350+lbs it has a 1 horse power baldor motor. I do not know who makes it or really anything else about it. If any of you folks have seen one of these I would love any info you have on it.

Interesting and never heard of a sponge sander. I would think the sponge would get too hot.
I have seen ones that looked like that which were pneumatic sanding drums. I have a couple of them.

Hey Redoak49 I checked the ends of the “sponges” and they have Schrader valves on them! I literally just finished unloading two trailer loads and a truck load of tools into the shop from this auction and haven’t had time to assimilate then. If you Google “sponge sander” it does bring up a modern equivalent of this machine so I assume that’s where the auction house got the name and I just made an assumption. Do you have any idea of any other names these go by? I’ve seen a couple pictures of similar machines on various forums but mine is the first one I’ve ever seen come up for sale and I got the whole package for under 100 so I couldn’t pass it up. Overall I know very little about it at this point.

Nice find. Google “pneumatic sanding drum”. Great for double curved parts like back rests of chairs etc
