What to put over BLO? - 7 replies

I recently made a shelf to store my cutting board inventory and finished the shelf with BLO. it’s been 4 days…and it still smells. What can I put on it to get rid of the BLO smell or do I need to put it outside for a week to dry? I was thinking maybe paste wax…i didn’t want to poly coat it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Can't get a smooth finish - 4 replies

I’ve been working on two slab end tables. I’ve sanded them to 220 but when I put a coat of General Finish on it comes out streaked/bumpy. I’ve sanded them down, made sure to wipe them clean but I just can’t get it to look the way I want. I’ve also noticed that my can is getting a hard film on top of what’s ...

Eleks Maker question - 2 replies

I finally bought a laser engraver (Eleksmaker A3) and was wondering if anyone here has one and can give some tips? I assembled it and managed to burn some text…but can’t get the font to change when I put my own text in. I’m using their software but was wondering if anyone can recommend a better software to use. The internet ...

Porter Cable 696 router table - 1 reply

I picked up a Porter Cable 696 router table for $10. No fence/insert…but that’s not the problem I’m having with it. I only have 1 router (Ryobi plunge) and it won’t fit the table. Which model router should fit it? Google has failed me and Porter Cable never responded to my email. If anyone has this and can give me so...

Laser engraver recommendations - 3 replies

I’ve been thinking about getting a laser engraver to customize cutting boards I make. I’ve done a little research…but not really sure what’s out there in my budget range. I’m looking for something that I can slide the board under and engrave so the enclosed ones won’t work. I also know you need software and...

Waterfall table joint - 2 replies

I have a piece of Black Acacia I picked up and I’m going to make a waterfall style table out of it. I have 2 issues…the first is the joint. There’s about 3’ from the end that has straighter sides but at 3’ pretty much to the end of the board it narrows down to 11” wide..but only 5” of flat on the bac...

Looking to get a jointer - 11 replies

I recently picked up some lumber that’s more on the rough side than the usual s3s wood I get. Now that I’m trying to use it in some projects I’m finding that getting a straight edge/flat surface isn’t so easy and it’s time to invest in a jointer. I don’t have a huge shop (2 car garage used for storage and my...

Epoxy for filling holes recomendation - 15 replies

I’m working on a small walnut slab I picked up that has some cracks/knots I need to fill and I’m looking for epoxy recommendations. Google is great…other than the million results that are a pain to go through. What brands do people use here and where’s a good place to buy them? I have a TAP plastics local that sells ...

What's a good finish for a coffee table? - 22 replies

My next project is going to be a walnut slab coffee table and I’m trying to figure out what to finish it with. I’d like a satin look finish and see several products out there. General seems to rate well, be easy to use, and looks good. Minwax—easy to get at big box store. I’ve used their products in the past and t...

Best paper for Jet 16-32 - 5 replies

I recently purchased a Jet 16-32 drum sander and like it…but it comes with 80 grit pre- installed and that’s great for starters…but using an orbital to get the marks out is WAY too much work. I’m looking for recommendations on which 2-3 grits above this would be best (say 150/220) to get projects ready for final sanding....

Thinking about a drum sander - 23 replies

I’ve been debating on the need of a drum sander in my garage shop and due to a job change I have extra $$ I can spend on one. They seem to be pretty useful especially when making end grain cutting boards or sanding larger panels. As a hobby I do make face grain boards (and sell them, pays for the lumber) and have been wanting to do some ...

Finger joints...why can't I do these? - 28 replies

I”m in the process of building a small box. I have a porter cable dovetail/finger joint jig that I’ve used in the past with no problem but today…I can’t get anything to work right. I’ve tried on scraps and the joints are shifted just enough that they won’t line up; I’ve tried two different router colla...

Fairly quick dust collection question - 5 replies

I have a HF dust collector in my garage/shop. I run the debris through a thein baffle and this pulls out 99% of the material; the collection bag on the collector is almost empty after a lot of use. The other day i poked at the dust bag on top…and a cloud of fine dust came out. I’m thinking I need to clean/upgrade it. Is a better ...

Buying/working with slabs - 6 replies

I’ve been thinking that our front room needs a coffee table. I’d like to make one from a slab but have some questions about buying the slab and how to work it. First…price. What’s a fair price for slabs? I’m not talking about a 6’ wide piece of black walnut…something 18” to 24” wide and...

Drill press - 7 replies

I have a HF benchtop drill press; had it for years and it cost me about $50 new. It’s never been great but was good enough for my projects….but now I’m wanting a bit more precision and think this needs to be replaced. When it’s running the tip of the drill bit wobbles just a bit, with a forstner bit it’s fine but ...

Restoring old VW Wood steering wheel - 4 replies

One of my son’s friends has an old VW Bug. He picked up a new to him steering wheel that he’d like sanded down and re-finished. I don’t have a problem doing this…but I’m not sure the best way to clean some of it. The part that faces the driver is smooth and I can sand that out easy. The back side with all the fi...

Problem cutting circles on bandsaw - 5 replies

I’ve got a Grizzly 14” saw and I’m having some issues cutting circles on my circle jig. If I use the 1/4” blade to cut a 2.5” diameter circle it works fine. If I put the 3/8” blade (Timberwolf i think) on it doesn’t cut right, the blade seems to be bending at the bottom of the cut piece so it’s a...

Spray lacquer/shellac - 6 replies

I’ve reached the finishing stage on a project (that’s taken WAY too long to do) and I’m going to use spray lacquer on it. I was watching on YouTube and one recommendation is to put a layer of shellac then the lacquer over it. Does this work or should I just put 3-5 coats of the spray lacquer on? It’s for a family mem...

Edge joining boards - 3 replies

I’m in the process of building 3 dog crates for my in-laws. I’ve used pocket screws to hold the side panels and roof panels together…but plugging/sanding is adding a lot of time and some cost to the project…since I’m giving the “family” price I’m not going to make a whole lot on them. I’m ...
